I just bought my own truck, first one. Titled it in Georgia. However, I’m wanting to register it with the company I’m leased to which is out of Ohio. Registration was rejected because Georgia won’t release the title because I haven’t registered with them. I’ve explained my intentions to Ga IRP division and even called. I’ve asked other owner operator friends, called companies that do registration paperwork for you and no one knows what to do. So here I am. Anyone had this problem?
Are you a Georgia resident? Just switch the title to your name. You don't even deal with their IRP since you're not registering it there. They need to give you your title if you are the legal owner. The registration is irrelevant since you can own the truck but never put it on the road. When it comes to IRP, you can leave the title in any state really when you're leased. For IRP you'll need to list the Carrier's details as the MC responsible for safety to get plates. The application will ask for information your Carrier will have to provide you. I'd recommend getting an IFTA account setup in your name while you're at it too so your Carrier doesn't rip you off.
It could be like in TN, unless you have a dealer’s license they won’t give you a title without buying a tag. What I’ve done in the past is just get the cheapest plate they offer, and then get the plate you actually need. I have bought regular auto tags for class 8 vehicles, just to get a title.
I did the same. Bought the Truck in Ga. at a Chrysler used car lot. Sellers brother was the Manager, handled the closing, including Chrysler Financial financing. Left with a 30 day temp paper auto plate. Even hauled a couple loads to get home. Luckily I didn’t get caught. Desperate times, Lol. Got IRP plate using temp Title/plate closing papers. Like most Dealers they operate as an extension of the States operations. Didn’t get the actual Title for a couple months. Like others said, get the 30 day temp, use paperwork as temporary Title.
You are not going to get your own plates, you want the company's plates. The company that you are leasing to should have all the necessary paperwork to complete the process.
That's insane. Never knew that. Seems kind of shady to force someone to buy something they don't need.
I appreciate the replies. I am a resident of Georgia. I’ve decided to cut through the red tape and just register and tag it in my home state. I was trying to avoid a lump sum payment on the tags. If I tagged through the company I’m leased to they would deduct so much a week until it was paid for. However, I am prepared to cough it up just preferred not to.
You're better off that way. You'll know 100 percent what they will cost you every year and you’ll be able to get your own IFTA account too. If you don't have these, the Carrier can really overcharge you and you'd be none the wiser.
