low clearances

I just got my first load assigned to me and they told me that there are some low clearances I need to be aware of. I have the qualcomm in my truck with the route all loaded up. Will the qualcomm route me around these low clearances? If not how do I find out where they are and witch way to get around them and then back to my original route? Thanks for the help

 

Do you have a truckers atlas?All the low bridges are there.Where exactly are you and where exactly is the load going?Maybe some exp driver can give you a route.

Call the customer dude and ask...

 

You cant count on the customer sometimes they have no clue about truck routes and low bridges proper trip plan, check your map and gps and always keep your head up and eyes moving i see low bridges everyday in ny and all i do is turn right or left in front of the bridge next street make a right or left and get back on my route right after the bridge now figure it out.

 

Just close your eyes for seconds while repeating, "I think I can, I think I can"... if you can't see it, it can't harm you. Just like hiding under the blankets when you were a kid so the boogeyman couldn't get you.

In all seriousness, though, pay attention to signs. Truck routes are marked, low clearances are marked. Audit your fuel route on your Qualcomm against the low clearances listed in your Motor Carriers' Road Atlas (if you don't have one, quit being a cheap ### and go buy one). Request finals to the customer, call the customer to verify those finals.

 

They might not have all low clearances but just maybe to the con would give him an idea of what route to take.

 

I doubt seriously the routing in the Qualcomm considers bridges (or hazmat either for that matter)

 

Your status says student, have you ever had a trip planning class? This is not a dig at you but I am interested in which school you attended. As others have said buy an atlas at a truck stop and the truck routes and low clearances are in there.

 

You can not depend on any one but you. When you see a low clearance throw on your 4 ways and stop right before the bridge and creep up to where it might hit open the door and look. Remember the clearance may change towards the end. Then you proceed very slow until you're clear. If you can find another way take it no matter how long it takes. Hitting a bridge would be all on you no matter what anyone says, even the state. It doesn't matter how long you hold traffic up. They do not understand the hassles you'd go through if you did hit the bridge. If you have another driver with you or even another person be real cautious and go slow. There's so many factors involved that can change the clearance you can not depend on any of them. Even the low clearance signs. They might have been posted long ago when the clearance was correct. But pavings and other items may have changed the measurement.

 

The atlas is ONLY going to list low clearances on State, US, and Interstate highways. They are usless once you get into areas off of the main thoroughfares.
