In a few months I plan on enrolling with RDTC, and assuming all goes well, I plan on making Marshfield, WI my new home. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little about the town? It seems like a nice little town, and I've been trying to read as much as I can about Marshfield, but I know there is always more to learn about a place by either being there, or talking to people who have lived there. I have seen some fairly inexpensive apartments listed online for Marshfield, which is good, since I suppose I'll be spending a lot more time in the truck than in an apartment. Again, any advice is appreciated.
ETCH5858 thats funny, When I worked for Roehl it was a nice place small not a lot going on. The only things there that I know of is Roehl, Marshfield door, walmart and a couple other small trucking companies.
Actually it seems like a really nice place to live. Small enough to feel safe and large enough to have everything you need.
It is a pretty decent town. It is small enough to not worry about walking down any street but still big enough to have all the stores that one would need. It seems that most of the employees that I knew that lived in the area lived in the smaller towns outside of Marshfield. I have heard that the taxes are kind of high in Marshfield. Personally I would look at Stevens Point if I was a younger single guy. It is a college town and I have had a lot more fun in Point than any other town in Wisconsin with the exception of La Crosse and Madison.
I'm originally from the Chicagoland area, but I've lived in small towns as well while doing many years of seasonal work. For example, I'm currently driving a 25 passenger tour bus in Skagway, AK, which has a year round population of about 900. The closest Walmart is 120 miles away in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. I'm in my late 30s, so the college scene at this point isn't that big of a draw. I sold my vehicle before returning to Skagway this summer, so I need to live nearby anyway until I can afford to buy another vehicle. On that note, I really don't have a permanent address. I need to get to Marshfield and find a cheap apartment, so I can transfer my Alaska CDL C to Wisconsin, so I can then get my Wisconsin CDL A permit (I'm assuming I couldn't do that living out of a motel). I'm hoping that doesn't turn into too goofy of a process, since most apartments I've had in the past (been living in seasonal employee housing over the last several years) require you to have a job or source of income to even be considered a candidate for living there. I did speak with a Roehl recruiter over the phone and she said she could talk to them or write them a letter if needed, which I really hope works. I wouldn't need to use that motel during the training then, but would probably be doing a lot of walking to and from my new residence to the Roehl terminal.
