Maxthon Browser

Anybody using it? Anybody ever try it?

Seems that Firefox has slowed way down over the past few months. I've run all the Norton checks I've deleted cookies and history, but it is still slow, sometimes. Not all the time. Anyway, I just started using this Maxthon as an experiment, and would like to know if anybody has any comments about it.

Does the new browser seem to be running better? Sure it's not a bandwidth issue? I use speakeasy.net speed test as a benchmark to monitor my bandwidth. I found that sometimes my wifi speed slows way down on my laptop (but connect with ethernet and it's very fast), and restart and everything works great. I've not noticed any issues with my Firefox 24.0 and I'm all over the place with it and rarely mess with clearing the history and cookies. But I also know the TTR bbs site gets slow sometimes.

 

Uh no, Maxthon seems to work just fine with it. I had been using Firefox and THAT is what has been running slow for me.

Yes, it seems to be better, but I have only been on it for a little while. No bandwidth problems here. And yes, we can be a little slow sometimes on the BB, but I've seen it on a lot of other places.

Look under Task Manager and then under performance. Watch your CPU Usage.

Look under Processes and if need be, Google them and see what they are. Sometimes you get hidden programs downloaded you did not know about.

Look under Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall and see what is loaded. Google them if need be.

I use IOBit to uninstall as it does a clean sweep of the registers also. Beware installing this.. watch the install... some programs will ask to load you don't need.

Get CCleaner and run cleaner and Registry cleaner.

Note, Norton takes a lot of memory...

Go to start up and type in at search - msconfig - go to startup tab and unclick those programs you don't need loading when you boot up....

Also, has any software asked to update (such as java)? They like to install garbage search engines (by default) that are a huge drag and browser performance. Ask.com and other crap needs to go if it's installed as a search add-on in your browser. Even if they are not your default search provider, they still cause huge performance problems in browsers. Installing a new browser may have appeared to have solved the problem only because these crappy search engine add-ons (that may have been un-knowingly installed at some point) have not attached themselves to your new browser.

I'd look in your browser's add-on manager and remove all search engine helpers that you don't want or recognize. Anything other then maybe bing, yahoo, google, and a few others are dangerous and problematic and very invasive (they all are but some much worse then others), and the more, the worse the performance hit.

 

Thanks Mark. I got rid of Norton for many years, because of the amount of memory. But with this computer I've got 8 TB so memory isn't a problem. This Maxthon shows CPU usage on a tool bar, which btw is currently running between 5 and 7 %. I run a registry cleaner periodically. Download speed is currently 7.9 Mbps with upload speed of 609 Kbps.

Also you can on IE 8/9/10 go to the upper cog, manage add on's/search providers - set the one you want to default and remove the rest.

I just finished 5 days of cleaning someones computer after 3 years of doing nothing to it. Finally after 2 days of getting it to run somewhat like a computer I had to do a restore to factory. Two more days of updates..

Note also, if older computers and the system seems to run slow, it could be a sign the hard drive is going out.... this is what the one I fixed is showing.

Always try to save files/pictures/documents on a external drive or to the cloud. Many cloud services out there. I use DropBox (100gb/$10 month), but Pogoplug allows me to retain a physical drive in my house and access this drive no matter where via a cloud.

I just bought a WD Mycloud, 2 TB and plugs in the router, and has apps for the phones/tablets. Easy peasy...
