I plead no contest to phone harassment earlier this year...ended up serving over 90 days i jail. Other than a DUI back in 1999, I have no other criminal history. I have no CDL as of yet, but was hoping to find a school soon...Even if i pass the CDL school, are companies going to turn me away for this? It was a misdemeanor.
thank you ..I called a rep from JB Hunt, and he told me I had to wait 3 years, maybe I misunderstood him.
Unfortunately on most employment applications nowadays, they will ask you not only about felony convictions, but misdemeanor ones as well. Back 10 or 20 years ago, most employers were only concerned about felony convictions, but times have changed. Best thing for you to do is to complete probation (if you were assigned it) and wait about a year after your conviction date. Than you can petition the court to expunge or seal your conviction record so when you apply for employment, you can legally answer no to your misdemeanor conviction on a employment application. In the meantime, if you're still interested in obtaining a CDL, start calling around and talk to some recruiters and explain your predicament. Good luck.
Companies set their own policy on criminal backgrounds for drivers. Dozens of companies will hire you. Where is your location? If we know the hiring area you live in, we can give you some leads to companies.
A lot of bigger companies are more strict on criminal backgrounds (typically because of insurance issues). I've got a bit of a checkered past but still got a job within a month of graduating school, somewhere that looks even better than most mega companies.
