Hello all, I live in Illinois and work for my Dad's flooring company. I just got my CDL a month ago, and have drove twice now and absolutely love it. I drive to places to either drop off a load, or pick up a load, so i'm usually bobtailing one way, and my father got smart and decided to get intouch with a broker who can get him a load in the other direction when i ever have a delivery/pick up. Now, here's the question, in order to do that with the broker, My father said we need a MOTOR CARRIER #, but he doesn't know how to obtain it, nor does the broker (WTF????)
    We have USDOT #
    We have insurance
    We have IFTA stickers
    We are our own corporation
WE just need this MC# and no one seems to know how to get it?
Do you go to the DMV? Gov't? Currency exchange? Wal-mart? j/k :)
Someone please help me so I can start making some coin!

The Motor Carrier permit is issued by the state DMV ( at least in CA that is how it's done) and you'll only need to file once and renew yearly. CA's is about $400 and I can have multiple rigs on the same MC#.

When you got your DOT number, did you list as a private carrier or for hire?

just so you know. You are deadheading one way not bobtailing. unless you don't have a trailer then you are bobtailing.

there are companies out there who will do all the filings for you to get your motor carrier authority. Just so you know along with the authority comes lot of paperwork so find out what you are getting into. I would imagine now you are running as a private carrier not for hire.

When you do apply for this number, put a fax number as your main number, you will get calls for all kinds of CRAP! And at all hours too. Just a warning, its not fun, they will tie your phone line up for days!

I really pissed one off today. I asked her if she wanted to sell me insurance, or buy our invoices, and she never said another word, just hung up. :biggrin_25523:

Even your fax# isn't safe. Ever get "junk" faxes? :biggrin_25510::biggrin_25513:

I just give out a false number. usually a few digits higher then the real number! I never give out my number. Doesn't help that I don't own a land line anymore either, cell phones only so I really don't want people calling all the time

Well, I just ignore the fax and let it answer. But every once in a while I get some stupid fax about cheap health insurance. Yeah, I'm not real partial to those either, but its the lesser of the two evils.

No kidding, if I had been warned before hand about this, I would have done the same thing. Fudged the number, or put some doofuses number in that I don't like. :biggrin_2559: These people are annoying as all get out, and they don't want to take no for an answer. :biggrin_25510:

Hey Fingers, call your state Dept of DOT, they will help you. Ours has been really great with me so far, I just tell them that I'm green and I need help, and they will mail me everything that we need, and if I need help, I call back.

We hired someone to get our authority, so I can't direct you on how to do it, but I believe that there is a place online that you can file for your MC# on the DOT web site. I think I remember seeing that, when I applied for the DOT number, and thats where I stopped and got help, because I didn't know what I was doing. :biggrin_25523:
