Mud Flaps

If your trailer is equipped with forward fender mud flaps, are you required to have them on your tractor? I cant find where it is written....

 

It is individual state laws on the tractor.. Here in Alabama you must have them on the tractor...

I always heard, tractor mudflaps are not required as long as you have a trailer behind you. (dont have documentation to back that up) Now a tanker would need fender flaps, but a van or flatbed body would block any rocks getting shot back. I've gotten a dot inspection with my right tractor flap ripped off an passed with no trouble. (was connected to van)

 

Company took ours off our new tractors mostly cause the newer trailers landing gear was pushed forward and fenders shortened so tractor flaps would catch the end of the fender. My trailer is 10 years old tho. Much like most of my terminals trailers. Only one is new (2011)

 

And that is why I asked....ripped one off last week....I have to jack pretty hard to get in and out of our yard. Am ditching the flaps while connected.

 

Ours would catch if they rode up in the bracket on the frame. If you put them on straight then drill some holes, just enough for say a 1/4-20 bolt, that should keep the end of the flap from climbing and catching the fender. On the top side of the frame bracket that is while the clevis pin is on the bottom. Geez I hope that makes sense to you. Just saves the hassle of pulling them off

 

Whenever we were hauling frac tanks in the Oilfield the only time I had mudflaps on the tractor was when I was bobtailing. Tore too many of them off when moving frac tanks, so I would pull them off before I hooked up to a tank.

 

Company I worked for years ago took the mudflaps off the tractors and with them the red and white reflectors.
if that is so on your tractor you've got to put reflectors on the back of the cab, even if you have a trailer on the back. I got a CSA warning during a DOT inspection. The officer told me he sees this omission all the time. Be careful out there.

I'd run some of that tape on the rear most cross member on the frame.
