I was wondering if anyone could help me. I’m wanting to save money and keep DOT off my back. My question is, is it possible to remove the center of my muffler on my 99 International 9200? I want the sound and performance of a straight pipe without actually using a straight pipe

Anything is possible, with money spent in the right place.

Just buy a high flow muffler. I know Pittsburgh Power sells them. I imagine other businesses do to, like PDI. If I am right, the center of the muffler is a pipe with directional holes that duvets the sound waves thru baffles around it. No doubt some exhaust goes thru the baffles, but most goes straight out the muffler. You still are legal then.

When I worked with a fleet one mans truck was louder than all the others. Then new trucks came in and in a month or so his truck was louder than all the others. I asked him about that and he backed up for a minute. Then he said when your flashlight batteries go dead just through them down the stack. Normally D's back in those days. Said with the heat the acid from the batteries will eat the baffles out.

Donaldson part # M100463 is a free flow 5" diameter muffler with no internal baffles. It sounds good too. It won't cause you to go deaf.

I was in Colorado DOT years ago along with another guy. They told me I needed to have my GVW printed on my truck before I come back to Colorado and have a nice day. While I was getting my paperwork together they told the other guy to turn around and leave Colorado and don't come back until you have mufflers installed. This guy threw a fit, dot response, shut up and get out.

The mufflers stated above are your safest bet. I had the Pitt power ones.
