Need help

i just started a new job my truck is a 2000 mack tri axle my front axle when im loaded with 20 ton it works then i go to lift it lifts before a corner and then i go to put it back down after the corner and it is locked up am i going to fast or why is it doing this is it me or the truck brakes on it locking up ? i am stumped please help

 

First off, WHY are you raising that axle when you take a corner? It isn't necessary. It IS NECESSARY to raise it when backing though. If you are worried about "scrubbing tires," maybe you need to look at your costs a little closer, if you are an owner/operator. If it is a company truck, no problem.

Now I've been out of dump trucks for far more years than I was in them, (THANK GOD!) but I've never seen a tri-axle where the tag axle needs to be raised in going around corners. In fact, if you are running oversize like I was, (truck was permited to 120,000 pounds or so,) raising that tag axle is just going to put more strain on the rest of the tires/wheels/suspension.

 

Question... With your lift axle down, if you are at a stop light, foot on the brakes...when the light turns green, do you feel the brakes drag?

Like Mack said, that lift axle has it's own brakes, but it doesn't have a parking brake. So set the parking brakes, lift the axle, have someone else step on the brake pedal and release, try to turn the wheel by hand. As soon as the whoosh sound stops, the wheel should turn freely. If not, something's wrong.

Hey Mack...on self adjusting slack adjusters, how do you make them adjust? Do you think that perhaps he is making the slack adjusters on the lift axle adjust too far and drag the tires?
