overdimensional equipment

Doing my first wide load in a while, it seems as though the information from the company is rather lacking. What gear is needed to comply with the most states possible? I know some states require 7 foot oversize signs, some even 8 foot. Minnesota wants reflective signs for night travel. What about covering the licence plate? Which states want the sign on the load and not the trailer? Do they really care? I guess for flags its best to have 8, one in each corner of load and truck/trailer with a few spares.

Any issue with putting beacons on the light brackets? Seems as though guys are doing it less and less. Some states want a beacon at the back if the load impedes view of the beacons. Some dont want them at all. Manitoba only needs then on superloads.

 

Check the permit for each state of you will travel through. If the particular requirements are not listed call each individual state. Don't take chances, if at all possible print off the requirements from each state's DOT website.

 

Is this a Canadian only thing, or lower 48 too?
If Canadian, then maybe look at the Provinces requirements.
I have run up there, with the following, and had no issues.
Flags on widest part of the load, and on the front bumper of the truck, and rear of the trailer. Truck adn trailer flags are at a 45 degree angle outwards.
Oversize load signs front and rear, on the front bumper of the truck and the rear of the trailer. Signs on the load are not cool in my book.
Strobe lights, 2 on top of the truck with 360 degree visibility, 2 on the rear corners of the trailer. Signs are the truck sized ones, not the pilot car ones. I use mesh signs, and never paid for the reflective ones. Signs can not cover the license plates.

No idea how to not cover both plates. Meh.

 

What is the load? What type of trailer? Can you attach the banner to the load itself? If not, set your pipe stakes up on the rear of the trailer and string it between the stakes, or hang it on the rear of the trailer below the plate.

 

A crate on a step deck. Only thing that could work is one of my load levelers.

 

Will they let you put 4 extra nails in the crate to secure the banner?

 

on your trailer when you hang your Osize banner, push it behind the plate so the plate is still visible...

 

I just use signs on front and back, flags on widest point of load and beacon light for all states. NM and AZ wants flags on front if truck and back of trailer as well.

TX does not require signs or lights up to 10' wide. Just flags on widest point of load

 

Oregon enforces the 18" (tall) OD sign, ask me how I know.
