Even wielder thought and I am not driving nor current in trucking/govt reg. Drove 10 years and started and ran a successful equipment business for 14 years.
But a logical question arises from my reading this so far
Why don't you go ahead and get you a CDL and as many endorsements as you can cut. Then you are a plum for picking. Firemen do not go out to a fire without a hose and water. There may be circumstances preventing this, but it seems thru here you may have some good options in the area now.

You're concerned about an absent or lackluster job history? And not being hired, living too far up in the NE corner?

From some of your earlier comments here, you sound like you'd be a pretty decent fit for the trucking world.

Your age is also more of an advantage here than you might think, too.

Well, here's how I worked my way out of the same basic sand trap as yours.

Prior to getting my CDL-A, I was my mother's caregiver....for 5 1/2 years.

Talk about a sucky job history. Most trucking companies DO NOT LIKE to hear of such.

Still....I forged ahead, & got the CDL. On my own, at the nearby tech college--& NOT the indentured servant (contract slave labor) route.

Then....to make myself more appealing than the average beginning applicant, I went ahead, and got ALL THE ENDORSEMENTS: tanker, hazmat, and doubles/triples. I also picked up a TWIC card (this helped answer a lot of potential security and background concerns that carriers might have)--and, to sweeten the deal even further--I also got a US passport.

This showed those I later applied to that I was serious, and meant business. I was fully "tricked out"--and employers could see that.

Long story, short: on the 3rd try--Schneider National hired me, for OTR dry van duty (just what you need--or something very similar).

I say this because....later, when I was running loads for Schneider, 80% of my "action" then were loads up in the northeast--so your current location is probably close to ideal, for such.

Many carriers get a lot of their action up in the northeast (that's where a lot of the higher paying loads are)--so I would submit that your current location might actually be more attractive than you might first be willing to admit.

Now, I'm no longer with Schneider, & I do hazmat tanker duty--hauling fuel. Home daily.

My real point here in all this is: if I can do the above with my dismal job history (at that time), well....so can you.
