I am in the state of Michigan.

I own my truck and was leased onto a company that plated my truck with IRP. Short story, I can make the same money as a company driver right now without the risk, but I do not want to sell my truck, I'm hoping things improve and I can go back as O/O. It's the tractor only, I do not own a trailer and will not be pulling one. main reason i want a plate is so that the township doesn't flag it as abandon.

My question; can I plate my truck for personal use, and if so how do I do that?

Some states let you plate a truck as an RV. You just have to take company name and numbers off it ……… call you local irp office and say your gonna use it as a rv and leave the rest of the story out .

Going to personal/rv requires a title change in some, if not all states, your best bet is to just put regular commercial state plates on it (not IRP) and keep minimum insurance on it, which is a lot cheaper for under 100 air miles

    Craymarris Thanks this.

I don't really want to be minding your business but I'm curious what it is you're waiting for things to get better as an owner operator?

The rest of us are waiting for the bottom to fall out.

IRP is not mandatory. You should be able to plate that truck for non-commercial use at the lowest GVRW possible. Call your DMV.

No, you can’t unless you change the title and once that’s done, you have to really go through a PIA process that will take a lot of time, too much time.

You can spend the $900 or so to get a gvw plate but you have to maintain the insurance.

SoS issues the plate, the irp is part of the sos.

    which township?

You can get intrastate plate. Not IRP at local dmv. Will not be cheap. Ohio is about 1100.00 per year.

Might be cheaper to find a secure private storage lot.

Yeah, that was my thinking as well. It’s never been better times, so maybe try his truck some place else?
