I'm a newer owner operator, have a couple questions. I've noticed later model Prostars are very affordable. Why is this? I've seen several (different dealers) with low miles and low price. For example:2013 Sleeper with 284k - $17.5k Wow! Plus, when I see O/O's many pull refeers. I had another O/O that leases under the same company, returned his refeer saying he wasn't making money and went back to dry. I pull dry. Am I missing something?
Do a little research on International's Maxxforce engine and you'll see why they're so cheap. And the low miles is because they spend more time in the shop than on the road. But if you can find one with a Cummins, it might be worth checking out.
Lots of issues with Cummins-powered Prostars too; EGR, DPF, etc. Some of the issues are fixed with updates. @Heavyd is a good resource. Do your homework before buying one.
Many companies that bought trucks with the Maxxforce engine almost went bankrupt. You could pass those companies used truck lots and see practically new trucks for sale and the old trucks were still being used; in other words they had older trucks on the road and newer trucks for sale because the newer trucks have the Maxxforce engine.
i drove a prostar/cummins for a 18 mos as a company drivr, any issues i had i already knew about from research, i had heard how bad they were, dunno if rawze still has his but he had videos up on problems and repairs on his. i drove a 2009, for how cheap they are i may just lay down the cash for one in a few months and take my chances. its still up in the air. never drove the maxxforce. not sure if i would take my chances on them
I drove a rental Ryder 2012 Prostar once a few years ago to complete a run. I dont recall what motor it had but the #### thing was so weak it probably couldn't have pulled a greasy string out of a hog's ###. I was dropping 2 gears pulling an empty up some big hills. Lol...
