Nope, it ONLY has to do with Cellular Technology. In the US, ATT and Cingular use the GSM Technology and ALL OTHER Cellular companies use the CDMA Technology (Chips made by Qualcom) In other countries, GSM is the technology used.
Canada is still predominantly CDMA. GSM was supposed to take over years ago but it hasn't really caught on that well. It's predominant in Europe for the most part.
