I just started working for a company based in Atlanta. I’m a new driver. We’re running a 2018 International 26 ft box truck OTR. We haven’t gotten a lot of sleep seeing as our routes are long and it’s hard to sleep in the truck with no sleeper and it bouncing around. When my team drivers time runs out, I start mine. With us both being awake, I run for as long as I can before getting too tired (no possible way to sleep in this truck). So we pull over and sleep for a few hours (so my team drivers time resets) and hit the road to be on time. Is running OTR in a 26ft box truck as a team legal, my grandfather (trucking for 30+ years says no)? If it is, how to we make it work.

No it's not legal. The truck must have a sleeper berth to be legal. Or motel receipt.

I'm surprised you haven't been caught at a scale or roadside inspection. I admire your ambition but what you're doing is illegal.
How are you working your logs?

    CrappieJunkie Thanks this.

We have motel receipts, but we’re not getting the sleep we need. We did a trip from Howell Michigan to Nogales Arizona. We slept in the hotel maybe about 4 hours, so my team drivers time could reset. So we really only got 4 hours of sleep so his clock reset and then were awake for his driver, while mine resets, and then I take over after. It took us 34 hours (it’s a 30 hour trip, but our ELD catches our speed, and the truck doesn’t do well on steep hills, like we were doing 25 for a good half hour total going up mountain ranges, along with traffic, stopping to refuel, take our breaks and then sleep when I got too tired)

We both have Transflo ELD and have separate logs for it. So we do our 10 and 10 (but without a place to sleep it’s hard for either of us to do the other 10 with no room to spend the 10 hours to sleep, so we’re both awake. We both brand new non cdl team drivers, they threw us in a truck to figure everything out ourselves. So one of us doesn’t get to do a full 10 and has to wait off duty for our reset

    Are you making decent paychecks?
What would you do if you left that job?

Is it because we don’t have a sleeper?
