If this is the wrong place to ask I apologize in advance. I recently acquired my CDL permit. My uncle is a owner operator. Has his own truck. Am I able to drive with him without being on his insurance? Would he have to add me? He has a load going out west and I was wanting to get some experience /practice.

I would think so yes, but I would call the insurance company either way and ask as a phone call to find that out is a lot easier than if something would happen.

    Mcnutters Thanks this.

I know with cars, a permit holder is covered as long as the policy covers the licensed individual in the passenger seat. Don't even need to notify the insurance company until the permit holder actually has a license. It would be wise, though, to double check with the insurance company....easier to ask a simple question now rather than deal with potential consequences later IF something happens.

I think that if you did get into an accident, and the driver was not listed, then they could deny the claim.
This is why trucking companies have to have you approved by their insurance in order to qualify you as a driver on their policy. They also have to make sure this driver doesn't have a record beneath their requirements, and it would not be fair to stick a driver with a bad record unbeknownst to you or the insurance company, behind the wheel of your truck, and end up in an accident and then expect them to cover the liability.

Yes you would have to be listed on his insurance as a driver which will increase his rates. If not and you have and accident it could cause him big problems
