The saga continues! Got my new anytone quad 5 set up and been playing around with it for a while but started to notice a burning sensation on my palm from the mic while keyed. Searched up what this was and concluded I'm getting rf burn. I read some ways to alleviate this issue think I'm going to upgrade my coax and run another ground strap or two. Also heard creating a rf choke may fix this wanted to hear everyone else's thoughts. My set up is a 7 ft ss with mirror mount on a 2020 freightliner cascadia. Coax is just the wilson mini 8. Any recommendations on a new coax or suggestions on how to fix this issue are much appreciated. Edit: Some additional info it seems sometimes when I key up my swrs jump above 2.0. It doesn't happen everytime I'm keyed up however. I have not used this set up while mobile yet shutdown till tomorrow morning.
Did you read what I posted in the other thread? 102" whip on 2020+ freightliner cascadia Everything points to you having a current common mode problem which is related to the ground issue I pointed out. You need to ground the mount. Common Mode Currents AND If you still have issues, then take a wire from the mount to the chassis to see if this helps. If you use ferrit chokes, buy these - https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dxe-csb31-275-10 Coax, stop messing around with the truck stop crap. How many feet do you need? I estimate 10 feet so 12 feet will be good for you. GO here, and order it ... https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dxe-8xdx012 ALSO, get the sealant kit. https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dxe-wk-2
Yeah I saw your post running 2 ground straps on the door hinges currently I'm going to move one and connect the mount to the upper door hinge bolt. Yes 10 to 12 should work and yes I've learned my lesson on truck stop coax lol. I currently have 18' coax which is way more than I know what to do with.
Go order it from dx engineering. read the post again and check your grounds again. Just remember, I like others want you to get the best performance out of the radio and truck.
Was running today and did great while mobile no spikes in swr or rf burns. Not to much chatter today. Had a good convo with two hay haulers running through Norcal to Central Or but other than that fairly dead, plenty of skip. Still going to upgrade coax and run another ground strap.
easiest fix, just run a ground wire from one of the radios mounting bracket screws to a good grounding point under the dash on the firewall... You can also use one of the radios case screws to run a ground strap from... I've had that problem before with Road King 56's screen biting my lip, and the ground wire fixed the problem every time...
The only time I've noticed jumping SWR on a personal set-up was from loose connections & knicked wire. No matter the toughness claimed by a company, no wire survives an antenna dismount on the highway. It may keep the antenna attached as it did with my 102", but other than being a loss prevention rope it lost its usefulness.
