Road terminology:

Ok, i never learned because it was never discussed. And if you talk to anyone under 40 you'll agree.

Let's discuss and define road terminoolgy:

Such as but not limited to:

1) Surface street (?)

2) divided highway

3) highway i'm thinking, personally, this means any road that doesn't lead to a larger road---only smaller roads spill onto it? It can lead to other "highways" of equal "size." This means you can have only one lane in one direction and only one lane in the other direction and it will still be a highway? This is my thinking.

i admit i don't really understand what these terms really mean.

There are more terms but since i've heard them, i don't know what they are. These terms just aren't really used or discussed in detail prevalently in today's society, but it's still important to know because they are still used enough.

 

Divided Highway is just what it means . . . a highway with some sort of median.

Highway can be more than two lane. US Highways and State Highways. They can and do lead to larger roads.

Surface Street . . . Never heard of that one, but a street is mainly in cities and go by more than just 'street' . . . AVE, DR, etc.

 

Surface Street; A residential or regular street (2 lanes generally) within the city.

Divided Highway; A non-freeway (free way has defined exits and on-ramps) 2 or 4 (in cases 6) lanes with side or secondary streets (roadways) intersecting. Also can have light controlled intersections.

Highway(?); A general term that includes "divided" highway, a State Numbered route...like US Highway 95 Las Vegas going North through Nevada.

Divided highway is a highway divided down the middle by a barrier that separates traffic going in different directions

You wrote somewhere a while back you been driving 12 years. Thats getting hard to belive. You're asking the kind of questions lupe asks. How could you go so long not knowing these things? I wouldn't be surprized if your next question was "please describe in absolute detail how to open the hood" or "how do I know which door to use to get out of the truck".

 

If you read the trip planning thread you'll know the important thing to proper trip planning is keeping that left door closed so the obvious answer would be...
