Is it possible with newer smartphones to use the phone as your hotspot for the laptop and simultaneously take or make calls on it while surfing the web? Does it work good or does the internet get laggy? I have a mifi but it seems like there should be a better way and I could eliminate it off my plan.

I have a Verizon iPhone & a mifi. I have used my phone as a hot spot but you cant use the phone for data (hotspot) & phone use too. To me, there is no difference in the phone & the mifi for data/internet service.... Use the Mifi & keep your phone available for calls to/from wife, kids other family or emergencies like 911 etc...

I just bought a new Iphone and have it on a Straight Talk prepaid plan, and the mobile hotspot is disabled. I am trying to figure out a better way to access the internet from the truck as well, with my old phone I could tether to the laptop and if I had an emergency I could fly under the radar long enough to meet my need. I read somewhere that T Mobile had a decent prepaid internet, but I would like to hear what others are using before making up my mind.

I have a samsung s3….yes it is possible…thats what I do with my phone…but, its tethered. The s2 you can download an app I paid like $15 for free wifi from your phone(as long as you have unlimited data on your phone its ok) its called wifi router.

My s3 won't download it but my s2 does.

I have the Samsung g5, hotspot and phone work together on Verizon as long as you are in 4G, my G3 was the same way. Mine works great as a wifi hotspot as long as the signal is good, I guess that's the same with whoever your carrier is and whatever you use though....

So to set it strait. YES, to answer your question. Thats what I have with my Iphone6. Depending on what your data needs are. I bought a grandfathered unlimited data account on verizon. So I can literally use data all day every day as much as the connection can carry. No throttling, limits. The app is called PDA net, FiFox. Apple does not allow it in itunes. For it to work you need to jail brake your iphone. Then Pangu, run cydia, install PDA net, FiFox. It is just that simple. I have the WiFi on connected to my laptop while talking to the brokers on my Blue tooth head set.
ETA; I have the WiFi on to connect my rand to play with the weather and fuel price feature when driving, and can always make a call.

If you go strictly with the phone hotspot option you will probably need to up your data plan to avoid the overage charges. Maybe that's less than what you are paying for the MiFi, maybe not. Something to think about before making the switch.

Fajo, I am looking to go with ATT and the Iphone 6 Plus too...are you happy with the phone and with the ATT service so far? I am having serious connection and speed issues with Verizon and I am about ready to tell them to get lost. Thanks.

They are all big companys and customer service is neather verizons or AT&Ts strong point. On point i have been with AT&T for quite a few years now and i stay with them simply becuse i dont have any issue and 99% of the time i have signal never really had any issues on that end. As for the phone i love it, i tried the Galaxy 5s for a bit and all it did was lock up and freeze. I went back to iphones and love the quality and the fact that thr #### thing just works. Its all personal pref tho. :)
