I just went through the process, I think the Pre-Trip inspection is the one that trips people up. The road test wasn't hard, it was 43 miles though. The DC I applied at had 2 people put in their retirement notice last week when I was there.

www.drive4walmart.com This is where you can see the minimum requirements and apply to any Dc that has a current open hiring window. Windows for each Dc is posted for 28 days. As stated earlier many apply but few reach the final step. Many current drivers are going to retire with better than 20years. It is at this point as to why you hear ads for Wal~mart. My Dc is always hiring because first year drivers transfer out to Dc closer to their home. Being in the Houston area we are always busy. Other areas of the country are busier than others. Hear your asked to perform your job as a professional driver, deliver your loads on time and safely. No stress. No "hot loads". I am happy to drive for this company! Its not perfect, but its way better than a general freight company. Jm2¢.

Be prepared to be bombarded with information. This isn't like orientation at most trucking companies.

 

I do not have a dog in this fight but I find it a little tough to believe drivers are paid/treated so great when the store employees have to file law suits just to get what the law requires they be given. Seems to be a large disparity between factions. Just an outsider observation.

 

Agreed, it is strange.
The back end of the logistics chain is much different than the bleeding edge of the retail side.
Line workers in the DCs are relatively well-paid with full benefits packages. Regular employees at the DCs don't earn less than $16 an hour. On top of that there are shift differentials and incentive pays, stock bonuses, cash bonuses, and profit sharing.

Actually, like any retail job, the difference between a good experience and bad is based on management. At the stores with great management, you will find happy employees (how our local Walmart used to be until a management change). Bad managers = unhappy employees. Many left when the management changed at our local store. The store has not been the same since, but does seem to be getting better lately. Remember that Walmart almost 100% promotes from within. My neighbor is very happy working there as she is a manager (not store manager) who worked her way up.

The Private Fleet and the DC's are a completely different monster.

 

Careful Friend, I am serving one year probation as we type because I typed a response nearly identical to yours 9 months ago. It quickly went south and mack slapped my hand.lol
