Weight registering

I'm still new to trucking and have a question about registering trucks by weight. Could you register a class 8 truck for 26,000 lbs and get away without having to get a CDL. I know you can run a class 8 with a trailer that has a gvwr of 10,000 lbs or less and run it with just a class b license. I was thinking you could tag the truck for 26,000 lbs and not worry about it. Granted you could haul much weight if any at all lol. Was just a thought.

 

Unless you want to bobtail everywhere, it would not do you much good to tag a class 8 truck at 26,000. The tractor will weigh in the 17,000-21,000 pound range without a trailer. A class 8 truck with a trailer will weigh in the range of 35,000 +-. The lightest truck and trailer that I own weighs a little less than 34,000. I have a friend who pulls an aluminum flatbed and weighs just under 30,000. If you want to drive a class 8 truck you need to get your class A CDL and tag the truck for 80,000 pounds. It will be difficult to earn a living with less. If you want to avoid having to get the CDL and tag for 26,000, your best bet will be to buy a dually and gooseneck trailer or wedge for cars.

 

No you cannot put a trailer behind the truck and drive it with a class B license. You add a trailer and that makes it a combination vehicle

 

Tell that to the horse people. They have a class 8 tractor and a trailer hauling a place to live and 4 horses. No CDL needed. Only if your involved in commercial activity for money. No CDL for a 40,000 pound RV buss also.

 

I imagine you could, but you would still need airbrakes on your class c.

Actually you can pull a trailer with a class 8 truck as long as the trailer does not exceed 10,000 lbs gvwr. I figured you would not be able to tag it at 26,000. But if you could you could pull a gooseneck trailer like the hot shots pull but one that's not that heavy. I'm not new new person to trucking I'm new has in young. I've been around it all my life so I know some stuff. I was thinking there was something out there saying that if the gvwr or gcwr was greater it would be classed as a CDL truck.

Your all forgetting something. You don't need a CDL if your not a commercial operation. There are lots of people using a class 8 truck to tow their 5th wheel campers and horse trailers. No drug testing, no IFTA, no medical, no nothing!
