I have checked into both and in my opinion Smith Transport out of Roaring Springs Pa is the better choice. Of course its up to you though.

I base my opinion on the the pay scale, equipment, hometime, and benefits.

If you compare each outfit line by line on payscale, accessorial pay, benefits, equipment, and hometime I think you will come to the same conclusion.

I like a company that pays for holidays, detention time and vacation pay based on 1/52nd of the previous years earnings.

Be sure to contact each companies recruiter and ask about sign on bonuses as well. The websites offer generalized information that may not be up to date and in some cases they do not list how much they pay for holiday pay or accessorials. This is info you really should get prior to applying to any company.

I also have talked to some Smith drivers in the past that were very pleased and got home each weekend while averaging 1200 plus per week. This is a respectable amount for 5 to 6 days work for a company driver. I believe their top driver earned over 77,000.00 according to their ads a few months back.

Thought I'd add a few things to the conversation about Smith.Don't know who would be making around $1000.00 for Smith , but what I can say is that if it does happen, they're lucky. They promise the moon but it's only half full. Several of the drivers are complaining that the miles are not there.Short trips,200-400 apiece.Appears that the average amount of miles a week is 1800-2200. Loads are messed up,get to a drop and either there's no appointment or it's for the next day( this doesn't happen all the time but recently it is happening more frequently.)Also, they promise a new truck in 6 months---problem is, 10 months later it's still not in the works. And the truck that that was given is constantly breaking down(while driving down the highway in the passing lane at that!)The same problem never being corrected. As fussy as they are about the driver's log books ,you'd think that they would correct the problem or give the driver a newer truck before someone gets seriously hurt! After all, breaking down with the same problem 50 times in 1 week(and they're aware of the problem)is a bit much to ask of anyone. There is one good thing and that is they use trip pack and the paycheck is always there as promised.Guess they think a person can be gone from home 7 days a week and bring home around 500.00 and it's enough. After all they make it sound real good in the beginning.

To be fair I have heard many drivers complaining about miles and lower paychecks from just about every company out there. The economy is in the toilet and companies are hurting all over. The equipment issue is troubling to say the least and if they are indeed skimping on maintenance issues then this is a very bad sign indeed.

You're right about the economy and it's understandable that things would slow down. But I guess if it's happening at other companies , there is nothing else to do except be thankful that you're still able to have a job.Right? They had announced though, that they wanted their drivers driving 36,000 miles in 3 months.

That is the correct attitude to have. Many drivers are losing their job altogether because their company went out of business. If you have a job today as a driver I would be very leery of quitting it and trying to go elsewhere. Drivers are becoming a dime a dozen and the best way to keep your job is to do the job to the best of your ability and not make any waves that may get you terminated. The squeeky wheel may get the grease but it may also get replaced altogether.

Hi everyone thanks for all the help!! just to let you all know I have taken the job with National Carriers of Kasnas. (as long as I get my green card). The main resion for this is I can be based in Florida which is good for wife and kids as my inlaws live there so we are going to move in with them for a couple of months, while we get the kids schools sorted etc etc.National Carriers have told me that they can get me home every 2-3 weeks.Which will take some getting used to as at the mo I'm home every weekend here in the uk.But I'm looking forward to driving the big rigs over there it's been a dream of mine since my dad took me out in his truck when I was about 4 years old. It's going to be a longgggg process they are saying about 12 months from now, It's been in system since December 2007.

Hi Happy Hammer, did you apply yourself directly to these companies or did you go through a recruiter, if you do not mind me asking? I have been sent applications from tfu and want to make sure all is legit, am just leery about sounding so much money to oz for US jobs, without hearing more success stories.
