Hello everyone. I work as a contractor in a company. Recently I started my own company but still work as contractor. Do you know can I apply and get WorkComp Insurance for free? I've heard that it is possible to get WorkComp Insurance for one employee (for myself) free of any charges.. Is that true?

Every state has their own rules. So, best if you contact your state.

If by chance we are talking about New York and you are a driver. You probably should not be classified as a contractor and also should eligible for workman's comp and disability.

I am thinking what you mean is that you can exempt yourself from having to carry workmens comp on yourself. As a company owner in almost all states you are allowed to exempt any officer of the company from the coverage reducing your costs. Part of the theory is that you aren't going to sue yourself if you are injured. No insurance company will give you Work Comp coverage for free, nor will they give you anything for free with the exception of super nice Rand McNally Truck Atlas and a pair of gloves from mine. In Georgia you are exempt from carrying coverage if you have 3 employees or less.

Whether you should be classified as a contractor for the first company you mention is a whole other story. No, it is not true that you can get it for free.

There is no such thing as free. You are required to have Workmen's Comp and you are required to pay for it. You are also required to pay for health care insurance. You are also required to pay for auto insurance and truck insurance. If you have a home loan you are required to pay home owners insurance.

The only insurance out that that is optional is if the Dealer has an Ace showing. Never take insurance.

The insurance industry is the single biggest lobby group in Washington DC. ALL insurance is bad and drives the cost of living up.
