Why is it so difficult to reach recruiters?

I have submitted applications to several companies that hire new drivers. I'll receive some emails from a recruiter (they might be automatic), and maybe a voicemail, but when I call back, the recruiter I'm assigned to is never available, and I'm stuck in limbo with no updates.

    Is this common? Any tips?

Recruiters have a lot of people to talk to daily, especially if you're trying to get on with a large company with several thousand trucks. Keep trying man.

Some recruiters are 3rd party. They recruit for many co's. So they are not directly involved with the co. you applied to. They do the first stage, getting your name/experience/job history etc then if you proceed with the application, you be dealing with someone else.

Recruiters have more applicants than trucks to fill. The industry has slowed down in the last year. Also, recruiters are used car salesmen, not objective sources of information. They will tell you "our drivers AVERAGE 2500 miles per week" whether it is true or not. They use word games to suggest you will make great money, "our top 10 drivers average over $X per week or $X per month." Averages don't work by just choosing the top 10 drivers. Newbies hear average and think "I'll probably make at least that amount." Not until you learn how to run the miles, and be on time, and overcome dispatcher/customer screw up. If you want to know the pay and conditions at a company make the company put you in contact with current working drivers doing the work you will be hired to do. Ask those drivers "how much money did you ear last week?" "How many miles did you drive last week?" "What schedule did you work last week?". DO NOT ASK "do you make enough money?" "Do you get enough miles?" "Do you like your schedule?". Even honest answers to those question tell you nothing about if what they are doing will fit what you need.
