Having to take insulin will disqualify you for a DOT physical, witch will keep you from driving a CMV
Yep the whole trick is a strict diebetic diet. Eat only foods that don't contain sugar or convert to sugar. It's hard to change ones eating habits after a lifetime of doing so, but it is possible. When I buckle down and eat right I don't even have to take my medication. Eat the wrong food and it sky rockets. A type 1 if he demonstrates he can maintain his glucose, he can get a waiver and drive. Job selections might be minimized but they are out there. There are plenty Type 1's driving.
I take the same thing. I wouldn't take the medicine until 30 minutes before eating. If you skip a meal, skip the medication. These medicines are short acting and should be taken with meals. 45 is almost a 911. I hate that Glyburide. It'll knock you down 100 points sometimes. The Metformin about half that.
Taking the shots requires a waiver. You can pass a DOT taking Insulin. I do not check my blood sugar at all. I do an A1C test once a month now. I do not eat sugar. I miss sugar. And I miss honey. And I miss Graham Crackers. Gummy bears and worms. Popcorn balls. Fruit loops. That honey bear cereal. French kisses. Having a girl lick my ears.
To think I used to look for places that had Crispy Cream donuts for breakfast....Yea, I take all the meds, but I'm the worlds worst diabetic. I guess you need to look at the big picture.
I know a woman who is diabetic who didn't take care of herself. She has been out of the hospital for a couple of months or so now. She went in due to one of her feet being black. He had to have it amputated. After amputation she got a flesh eating bacteria and had to have her entire leg amputated. In the mean time she devoped problems with the other leg and had to have it amputated. She seems to be better now, but it is difficult to get around without legs. If you don't take care of your body when you have diabetes you can lose your limbs. This woman is not out of the woods, yet. She could still lose her life. She can no longer work. There is hope she can get aritifical limbs, but that is at least 2 years away. I met a young woman some years ago who refused to take care of herself. She was also diabetic. She was only 22 years old. She would go out and drink heavily and eat whatever she wanted. She developed ulcers on at least one of her legs. I have not seen her since that time, but I would expect that she wound up losing that leg. If you are diabetic, you need to take the disease seriously. Diabetes affects your entire body. If you take care of yourself you lead a fairly normal life. If not, you can lose limbs, develop heart and other problems.
The key words are "used to", with the Crispy Creams. If I have 2 or 3 donuts a year, that's pushing it. I can't even remember the last time I had a beer. I am the worlds worst diabetic, but I do watch the big picture. Anything in moderation. I see the doctor once or twice a year, fasting blood tests, A1C,and all the rest. Take all the meds religiously. Just had a full diabetic eye exam, everything OK. Even had an angeogram a few years back, zero blockage. I might call myself a bad diabetic, but I've got a great doctor, and I'll know if anything changes. I'm very aware of the things this disease can do, and I appreciate you posting this, maybe someone needs to see it. They say most people that have diabetes don't even know it yet. Thanks!
You are welcome, danmissouri. I have known several drivers who are diabetic. A good friend of mine is diabetic. He owns a truck and runs his authority. So far he hasn't had to take shots. He is managing the disease with diet and pills. There are some natural herbs and supplements which can help diabetics and without some of the side effects of prescription medication.
