Overall used truck market is down, but perception about the MF engine is pretty low and it is hard to move those trucks. While generally there have been substantial problems, there are also some MF engines that have held up well. I would insist on complete maintenance records on one before considering.

    lve2drv Thanks this.

that was the plan. for that price on a 2014 its hard to ignore but i would definitely request the maintenance records.

Ok, the core engine is actually pretty good. It is all the emissions stuff surrounding it that is causing the bad rap. Any Prostar with a MF13 for sale needs to have the right maintenance done so it doesn't become a lemon for you. Basically all engines will need both EGR coolers replaced with the EGR valve within the first 3 years. After about 4000 hours, the DOC, PreDOC and DPF need to be removed and cleaned. The after treatment injector needs to be replaced at this time too. If none of this has been done, it is a ticking time bomb!

They are cheap for a reason.. I drove a 2013 and trust me the truck will break... and will break you within a year. I have spent around 40k in repairs my first year with the truck until I got rid of it. This is the most unreliable truck I've experience. I guess the price was to good to be true, but in reality its a junk of an engine.. the prostar with the Cummins engine is great, but this setup will cost you a lot more than a maxxforce.. just don't make the mistake I made buying a maxxforce or you will soon be here telling me (I should have known better)

you buy a maxxforce I can already predict what will happens.

first breakdown on the side of the road. If you have mechanical skills like I do you will find a way to buy the part and get it fixed.. not cheap parts.. hope you have all the tools with you.. If you have to towed the truck to a repair shop it will be a nightmare since they take days if not weeks depending on the issues. You will get it fixed for sure thinking all done and well.

second breakdown on the side of the road again. this type of trucks will not let you drive off the roud.. where it break it break. know you are wondering how come such a low mile truck broke down so soon after the first breakdown. well you get it fixed and on your way.. hurting and running to make back the losses if you can still deliver the load your truck broke down while hauling.

third breakdown has come and once again you are wondering, again but why if its almost new with around 300k miles. well if you are smart by this time you will start planning on getting rid of it before its too late. but if you are like I was alway trying to make a thing work for you then get ready for more action.

by this time you have spent around 6 to 10k on repairs.. just about all you earnings and still trying to make the insurance and tax payments.

4th break down. on the list of things.. egr cooler and valve, fuel lines, fuel rail, fuel pump, turbo leaking oil (yes the turbo is poor quality and you have two of them on this) belt and tensioner, water pump, expensive oil changes and other services.. and this are just basic components.. but in the maxxforce they are so expensive you have not idea...

in my case 15 break down in 8 months..and over 40k on parts and repairs... the truck is barely 400k miles.. just crazy how this went down for me...

then I asked myself.. am i the only one, or maybe I got the bad truck... well a fleet near me got rid of their 8 maxxforce in exchange for cummins isx... said too much break and down time with that engine.. never again will lease or buy them..

a fleet of 150 trucks.. around half were maxxforce 13,, thinking that a brand new truck will hold together 3 years before the lease expire for a more affordable price.. well it went sour when they started sitting at the dealer and not running on the road.. so they got rid of them and now only have freightliners..

then i go online and the same story everywhere.. and the only few ones that like their maxxforce have only been driving them for a month.. so good luck with your decision.
