ladies gentlemen I have a 2006 Freightliner Century class SmartShift I'm driving down the road all the sudden I look at the the gear number on the dash it goes into neutral for a minute and shift back into the gear I lose power completely in a puff of smoke comes out of the exhaust I'm at a loss for words here I thought it was the turbo apparently the turbos fine no codes pop up when this happens anybody got any ideas on what this could be thanks ahead of time
!st. ck. or have the batt. con. clean at a shop, small fuse inside batt. box power trans. and ecm. if con. is lost after going over bump, broken wire or bad con. is prob.?
ECM and transmission control trying to control parameters, and not always working correctly. I'm guessing for some reason that the combination is going into freewheel, by mistake. I refuse to ever drive another Eaton Ultra-shift of that vintage. I drove one for 18 months(longer than that, but I have to dig through my records to get it exactly and I'm really not wanting to remember it any better) and those dues are overpaid. Is it a ten speed or a 12 speed, if 12 it is a Freedom-line, which is a little better, IMO, but still had the electrical glitches. They used the same paddle actuator(shifter) in FLs.
Ok, we are having the same issue. Except this time the driver patiently narrowed it down to heater being ON in cab. When he drives and heater is on, the auto transmission with do the same thing. Downshift, upshift and lose power at random. When heater in cab is OFF, it does not do it. He ran with bunk heater and small fan blowing heat to cab to isolate the trouble. Has anyone ever ran into this. I remember there being a Freightliner wiring expert on TTR but I cannot seem to remember his name. As I type this, the owner is tearing the whole dash apart to see if wiring near the heater core is causing this. What a headache!!
There are 2 power supplies to the TCM.. One direct power to battery, the other switched.. Make sure you have solid battery (both +&-) at the TCM terminals (bolted to transmission driver side).. Note: the wires tend to weather rot and turn to mush... ....Philip
