When do most company's (I realize not all are the same) start counting your driving experience as actual experience for hiring purposes? For example, you started: Class - October 1 Student (team w/trainer) driving - December 1 Graduated considered a qualified driver in your own truck - February 1 Would you have (in the eyes of most company's in general) 6 months, 4 months or just 2 months experience as off April 1? Keep in mind these dates are just random and assume there is no break in between school/student driving/qualified driver dates. I'm just curious because I have a short list of company's in mind after I gain 1 year experience and I want to know when I can mark it off on the calendar. I do realize I should call any company I'm interested in and ask them but I just thought I would check in here first for some general answers.
In my opinion, and how I look at it, is if you're getting TRUE experience driving, then thats when you started driving. I count my experience from when I climbed into my mentor's truck. Now you get a couple years experience in, and it really dont matter. Someone in HR thinking of hiring you asks you 'how long have you been driving?', you answer by saying "a little over a year", or "14 months". They really arent going to care 4 - 6 weeks were spent still learning the ropes. Once i get 5 years in, i'll still consider myself 'learning the ropes'. Kinda like asking how old you are. You dont tell people how old you are from the time you learned to walk, do you? =)
Interesting... I thought I read on here a while ago that a lot of companies would count even your schooling as "experience" in consideration for a job. All well, it's not like I plan on leaving my current company any time soon in this economy. I was just curious.
The larger companies won't even look at you, if you have'nt been to school. It's just one big racket.
I have to agree with some here..My co. looks at it as when I first got my own truck.They consider the driver to be officially hired after they complete their 28 days of training...after they do that, they have to take a driving test where the safety dept determines if they can drive for us.There are people who fail that final test and get let go....
Nope..schooling is part of the hiring process. Until you go solo or team with someone (permanently), you are in the learning phase not the "experience" phase.
