so here's my deal. i was in the military for 4 years as a ...thats right 88Mike... but i never set foot in a 5 ton or deuce and a half. i strictly stayed heavy. i drove the HET system which is a tractor m1070 and flatbed trailer m1000 hauling tanks. anyways, did that for 4 years. drove in Kuwait which they had old school heavy trucks. and also i drove in Korea for two years. but that was four years ago. life happens and now im considering a trucking job. i know nothing about the industry right now. i live in minneapolis (plymouth) minnesota, and i guess i just dont know where to begin or how to find a good company. i suppose ill have to go to one of these schools and get my cdl, i never did that in the army but if you could give me some good leads, pointers, tips and good companies to check out that would most appreciated. i was also accident and incident free while in the army. i was an e4 in korea training my superiors on how to use this truck. so i considered myself a pretty good driver.
Welcome to the Site. I was also a 64 C which is now an 88 M. Are the Hets still Osh Gosh? You will need a school. You can use your GI Bill for the training. I would do that rather than contract with someone. That will give you better options as far as companies go.
I can't really help you in your neck of the woods. I pulled freight through there a lot, but I am not from that part. With your background are you wanting to stay in the flatbed/ heavy field? Or are you wanting to pull a van or tanker or reefer?
im just looking trying to figure out what my options are. if i could do heavy transport that would be fine. but i cold do any.
I drive or really drove the 7ton Oshkosh them HETs are bad, i wish we had them, i guess the marines will get them as soon as the army upgrades.Good luck to you im in about the same situation.
