I want to drive trucks. I have wanted to drive trucks for 21 years. Why am I not driving trucks then? Well, my daughter turns 21 on the 26th of this month. Priorities... nuff said. So now, I'm 40, and I already drive buses for the city, (not the same thing I know) but I do deal with a lot of crazy drivers and the added annoyance of carting the dregs of society around in a 40 ft. bus. And now I wanna live my dream. My Fiance' and I went to a Steven's Transport seminar at the local job fair. Everything the recruiter said sounded awesome. I filled out my application and waited about 5 days and got a call. The woman I spoke to said that I had been pre-approved to attend school at the local college. He (my fiance') however did not get approved for hire because of a 3yr old misdemeanor charge and a 11 yr old felony. Its not a big deal to me, I am the primary bread winner in the house now, because I have a clean record and I am at top pay with the company I work with now. Now... I have done some research on Steven's, and seen some of the complaints that are out there about this company and to tell the truth it scares the crap out of me. Early in my life I attended what I call "Joe Bob's School of Business" and I have no desire to attend "Joe Bob's School of Trucking". I worked hard all my life, to make a place for myself in the world, I sacrificed and struggled for the good of my family, but now I wanna do what I wanna do. I know it sounds crazy, what sane person quits a perfectly good job to drive a truck across country and get treated like crap? Me I guess, and since I am determined to do this I thought I would ask the advise of the men and women who do it every day. We chose Steven's because they say they will hire felons. But since they aren't going to hire him, and if I did go with Steven's he was just going to ride with me, then it really doesn't matter what company I drive with, as long as I can have a ride along within a reasonable amount of time after hire and training. So I want a good one. I have a clean driving record and a strong work history. Any advise from anyone will be appreciated.
Hello and Welcome to the Site There are certainly other company and training options available for you. You will have to do some homework to find which one will work the best for you. Please start a thread in our forum for trucking schools when you do pick a school. Best to You!!!
Central Ref is a pretty good company to start with. There are some good threads on this forum and a lot of drivers who are happy with them. They have a rider program and a pet policy. You are out of Texas? There is a terminal in Texas, but I think currently there school is only in Utah. No biggie, they should pay to get you out there. I am not a recruiter for Central (should be getting some compensation though!) I teamed with my wife for Central for six years and we had a really good experience! Pm me if you need anything or have any questions. Welcome to the forum! Good luck!
First off, take EVERYTHING a recruiter says to you, with a grain of salt. Maybe three or four grains actually. I have no personal experience with Stevens. However, if they tell you one thing and then do another at this stage, (I'm talking about hiring felons, but not hiring your husband,) just what do you think they will do to you once you have signed on? I think you would be better off to keep on looking. Find someplace that will take BOTH of you. There is one other thought that is sort of niggling the back of my mind though. Was your husband's convictions something that were so serious that NO ONE would look at him, or is there perhaps something more than you are aware of with him. (I'm not asking you to post about that, just to think about it.) Honestly, I am NOT trying to start any crap here between you and your husband, nor am I trying to be a jerk. (I can easily do that without trying or even wanting to. . .) Just want to have you think things through.
