Advice - how to charge for 7 axle dump?

I am trying to learn as much as possible about the dump truck market. I am looking to purchase a 7 Axle Superdump truck. My question is how should I go about charging for my services. Should I charge by the load Or charge an hourly rate? I’d much rather charge by the load but I need some advise. Please and thank you.

 

Guys here in the Phoenix area get paid by the ton.

 

Almost ALL dumps charge by the ton, but keep in mind you have to figure in time and mileage as well to come up with the correct rate.

There are some jobs like asphalt where it's by the hour

 

The question you should be asking yourself is “is there steady work available and how long will it be unloading and loading?” Something like a 7 axle I would think would need to charge by the hour to be profitable, and it would probably need to be north of $100 hr with a time minimum to be worth it.

 

My old boss charged by the ton, and trip. It is generally enough to cover the materials, payroll and cost of driving a certain distance with that load.

If you are not charging enough per ton, you will eventually accumulate a debt to the shipper of your material. You do not want that.

In Oregon when I drove a Dump truck it was all by the hour.

Thank you for the feed back! Im in Dallas Texas and construction out here never seems to end. There is a new highway being built all the time, not to mention the other countless construction jobs going on. There is plenty of work here in Dallas.
