Hey guys I have an odd question that has me wondering and the old man has no Idea either. Im 20 right now with 2 years driving a concrete truck under my belt so far and working on my 3rd year with no accidents but 2 recent tickets (last year speedin personal vehicle, year before seatbelt in the big truck) but I want to go OTR when I turn 21 partially because I turn in January and Im laid off anyway during the winter so If I dont like it I can come back to my job that Im in no danger of losing and in good standing with. Anyway to my question : Should I wait to turn 21 before I start filling out apps now or after I turn 21? I realize I have to wait for an openin which is why I thought maybe starting now would be a smart move and just post the start day as my Bday so its good but then again that leaves alot of open time for maybe something bad to happen like an accident. I have my Class A with tanker and did go to a credable cdl school at 18 and actually trained one of my ex instructors at my current job(Irony huh) and Id like to get a job either doing drop deck,flatbed, lowboy(hard to beleive as small as I am),or tanker (no hazmat yet but If the right oppurtunity came up I wouldnt have a problem gettin it) I do have limited experience with a tractor trailer after the school which is my biggest downfall I think as I have been driving a straight truck and have a small amount of time in our company truck and pup but Im hoping being it is the mixer truck Ill get some credit for keepin the wreck/rollover happy trucks in good shape and out of trouble.
This is the truck I have been driving the last 2 years. 325hp Mack motor(technically Renault is cast into the block) and Mack TM308 trans which sucks for highway usage but kicks ### for backing up long distances like a new age twin stick 8 forward 6 reverse and a 40mph top speed reverse Ive done alot of paving in her. Its about as bare bones as it gets no radio no AC no passenger seat, no jakes,basically if it was an option I dont have it and Im ready for a truck that has atleast a little flare my boss was actually upset when I put lugnut covers and my CB in it. The quote was "it makes it look unprofessional"
I would say wait until you're 21 to fill out apps, because between now and January, those apps will surely get lost and is highly unlikely they will even look past your age. P.S. Nice looking mixer!
lol naa its not in this photo it was right after winter layoff. She looks descent when I get the tanks and bumper polished and YES I polish a concrete mixer and try my best to keep it spotless. Why? Weight conrete is heavy and I dont need an overweight ticket an she weighs 29,817 cleaned full of fuel and 150g of water and if it trips 30K empty its time to get the jackhammer out. ANYWAY thanks for the advice I guess ai didnt think about getting overlooked b/c of my age. I was offered a job last winter driving a grain truck and went to the interveiw where they told me it was a mixup they couldnt hire anyone under 21.
