Okay, i was driving in the city, on a highway. i'm taking the downhill offramp and start to slow down (aprox 15mph because there was a turn, posted limit was 20) when light changes and goes red when I'm already about 10 feet in. there is a camera in the intersection. i am told that if the end of trailer is not in the intersection when it turns red, it is considered running a red light and i'll get a ticket. the people who i am with sware that they saw a light flash too.

so, will i get a ticket? If yes, is this fightable? thanks everyone. :)

Yes, LEO's can call that as running a red light. It's due to the fact that when a 80,000 CMV T-bones a car, the usual result is a bunch of dead four-wheelers. So, best advice for any CMV driver is to slow down some at all traffic lights in preparation to stop, and definitely don't try to go through a yellow. It's better to come to a full stop in the intersection and then continue, than blow through it.

Red light cameras will catch you moving slowly through an intersection. They're usually set up to catch someone just entering the intersection as the light goes red, so if you are in the intersection when it goes off (if you saw a flash it took a pic of your truck) they usually discount it. The tickets don't carry points against your license, but you will have to pay a small fine. If you do get one, it'll be sent to your company. Fightable? They have pictures of you doing it.

I don't now that there are very many municipalities that are actually ticketing these lights with cameras anymore, but let's assume for a moment they are ...

If the camera was mounted near the traffic light and some in the cab swore they saw a "flash", then the rear of your trailer was nowhere near clearing the intersection before the light turned red. The question you should be asking yourself is did you not stop when you could have. You were there, we weren't so you'll have to determine if you screwed up or not. The secondary question is, if the same identical scenario happened again tomorrow, would you do anything different.

Sounds like the light was yellow when you entered the intersection. You'll know in a couple of weeks whether you get a ticket.

Most, if not all, counties have stopped this practice because of multiple reasons........Don't sweat it

I set off cameras all of the time and never got a ticket. If you cannot stop in time, it's safer to blow the light than it is to jam on the brakes and block half the intersection because you couldn't stop within the line. Hence the reason why there's a delay between light changes at most intersections.

I have a personal rule I follow: for every vehicle there's a point of no return. If a light changes to yellow after the point of no return, I'm going through the intersection. If it's yellow before the point of no return I'm going to stop.

Good rule of thumb is to always approach a green light anticipating it to go yellow...giving you time to stop. If the light is green , slow down cover your brake and be prepared to stop. To the OP you may be OK...but try and remember my 1st statement...sort of surprised your instructor hasn't gone over the "stale green" light thing with your class. .
