Hello, I'm from central New Jersey.

I'm checking this site out because my boyfriend lost his job last year due to outsourcing and he's considering going into the trucking industry. He likes to drive, has a clean record and bill of health and is now searching different driving schools in hopes of obtaining his CDL and finding a job.

He found one school about 630 miles from us charging $4400 for a 3 week class. I don't know if I should name the school, but when I looked it up there are rumors of it being unsafe, not providing mileage promised and scamming people looking for jobs in these hard times.

Doing more research I came across this site and am now trolling through it trying to find truck driving schools closer, cheaper and with better reputations.

I searched the bad company forum here and saw threads longer than I could ever read talking about how they were screwed by the company my boyfriend is now interested in. I don’t want him to take that class and be stuck with them but he’s set on them because they garuntee you a job with them once you pass their class and drug test.

I told him: just because they promise you a job does not mean they’re going to provide you with the miles you need to make the rent in our apt. That’s what these former employees of unsaid company are complaining about on the bad truck forum. The only upside is that those complaining about this company are not from our area.

Either way he's getting desperate with unemployment ending soon and set on this company. Do any other trucking companies have that garuntee nowadays? Training and promise of a job?

I searched the starting out for rookies area and read that Roadway is a good company but I do not think (I may be wrong) that they provide any CDL schooling or classes (my boyfriend does not have his cdl license yet) and the website does not list any job openings in New Jersey.

I’ve also read that Covenant is a good company. I don't think they offer classes but they offer tuition reimbursement. I’ve also read their training is longer and harder than most and they pay less but if they are a safe, reliable company I rather my boyfriend be with them.

I’ve also read about Swift, a rather large company that some say is no good either but everyone has something to complain about and I don’t know what to believe.

I've even read that it’s a trap to take schooling from a trucking company in the first place because those are the worst companies and can only get employees by trapping the newbies with promises of schooling and a job afterwards, like unsiad company is offering and my boyfriend is considering. Those people say you should pay for the schooling yourself, which he could, by credit card, but he is on unemployment and it doesn’t seem to be the right time to be putting thousands on your credit card that you may not be able to pay back.

Those who say to pay for your own schooling usually suggests county college classes but my county college (Union County, NJ) doesn’t offer truck driving / CDL classes (as far as I can tell).

Are there any forums around here just for New Jersey so I can search for information more locally?

Sorry for the long post – if anyone has gotten through reading the whole thing, thanks for that. Any help would be appreciated...P.S. I’m super new here and can’t P.M. yet.

You will probably get some answers to your questions about schools or the trucking industry in general. We do not allow redirection to another forum per the TOS of the truckers report. Google is probably your best bet if your looking for something in your immediate area.
