So someone tell me what it is like to drive an automatic Big Truck.
Do automatics adjust to the weight of the load or the percent of the grade.
Does the truck go up and down through each and every gear, or will it skip a gear on a slight grade. Is the Jake setting on auto also ? more than one setting. (Jake auto, don't think so but I had to ask) Are automatics better on fuel mileages and will it keep a newbie in the seat longer. I have never driving an automatic, so I am wondering if I might like it or not. Experienced drivers with automatics Let me know, THANKS.:biggrin_25525:

sounds to me like your talking about an auto shift. A full automatic trans in a truck will be similar to the auto in your car or pickup. They take more power than an standard trans, and are nice in some applications. On the farm they are good if you have to hire someone to drive the truck, you don't have to worry about them grinding gears or blowing up the trans. From my understanding the auto shifts are a manual trans where a computer runs a control box on top of the trans and shifts the gears based on engine RPM, speed, load and probably a few other parameters. I have driven a couple, Had to run it in manual mode, and it didn't shift quick enough on soft ground. Based on my experience I would never own one. however they have made quite a few improvements over the last couple of years. Oh and they are pricey when things go wrong and need replacing.

There no better on fuel milage. When shifting gears sometimes the jake break will come on,very imbarassing. They dont hold up as well as a standard transmission. If you run alot of city work, there great; but OTR no! When i drove one for a company i manualy shifted the thing. My friend drived for pride has a autimatic,he heard a pop in the transmission and it went out, another truck in the fleet did the same thing.broke down on the side of the road. Ive heard stories of them getting stuck in a gear too.

Just wait until you see the repair bill on an auto-shift, crap-o-matic. You will wish you had scpec'ed out a nice 13 speed RR air-shift transmission.

If it cant be done with a 13 speed, it cant be done. If /when I buy a new rig you can bet it will be a Roadranger Eaton 13 speed transmission. 18 speeds are needed unless you are a logger or other off road driver, IMO.

Lets dont go there please. Its against forum rules for one. And if you knew how spell check worked, you would know the words used ARE spelled correctly (except for two). I do hate to point out that they are USED incorrectly. That could possibly put me on the same bottom feeder level as you have put yourself. Just read the post and go on, or skip it altogether if you dont like how someone spells.
And besides, its spelled please, not plz.

Automatics suck....period. I spent EVERY day....weekends and holidays included...calling the truck inventory manager for our company asking for a different truck because I HATED that automatic. I even gave it an official title: The Automatic Craptastic POS.
THEN when they switched me back into a 10 speed I had to remember how to shift all over again as I had not been driving very long when they put me in that automatic nightmare. It also didn't pull worth a flip on hills. Because I couldn't anticipate exactly when it was going to shift, the "surge" when it did shift left me constantly nauseated and motion sick....the ONLY time I have EVER been motion sick in ANY kind of vehicle.
Get a stick....don't settle for an auto.
