This may sound silly, but here goes. Can you get base plates in your own state and not get your own Authority? Here's why I ask. I'm doing a lease/purchase. But when I left the carrier I was leased to, there went my ins and plates. I could pay off the truck, but then I won't have a penny left. Since I have to pay for ins anyway, should I get my own plate to avoid being stuck with some carrier I'm not getting along with. That way I can make a transition from anywhere to a orientation anywhere.

Absolutely and that's the exact reason why you should do it.

    Yes, you can.

    I do it with Farm2Fleet.

I also have Phy Damage/Liability outside of them also.

    Excorcist1 Thanks this.

Thanks guys, cause I got a couple of job offers but of course everybody wants to inspect the truck. Well you can't get it there without a tag and I plan on being prepared, so I don't go through this crap again.

No carrier can require you to get plates on you own. Or can the require you to get Phy. Damage or Bobtail from them.

What is going to be required to get plates is authority. If you have it on your own then you just have to jump through all the other hoops and walla.

If not, then you have a lease with someone in order to get plates. What we have done when drivers need a lease for plates before coming to orientation is give them a lease but they still don't have any permits to legally run. Really low risk on our side and does not give them anything other than a document allowing them to get their plates. Wish states would take a letter of intent but not many people in government have been in the business world and able to think through these things.

You will notice some states ask for DOT # in your name. You can actually get a DOT # for just this purpose without getting active authority. Just look for the option on the site.

I think their doing away with the registrant only dot#s. Soon you will have to provide an active dot# with authority to get plates.
