Hi, I have this problem where I take klonopin for anxiety attacks and depakote which is also a sizere medication for headaches. I can't stop taking these medications, but I think there not allowed to become a truck driver and I want to start school in a month. Can I lie on my physical?

You CAN lie, but you BETTER NOT!!

There is a reason certain medications are not allowed. Talk to your doctor about getting a note saying you are not a menace to society with these meds. If you do lie and something, God forbid, should happen, the onus falls entirely on you. If you feel like you have to lie about something to get into this industry, perhaps it just isn't a good fit for you. If the only reason you are taking these meds is for headache and anxiety, perhaps you should explore other replacement meds. The two you mentioned, though, are often used for epilepsy.

If you are epileptic and lying to us here about that, you deserve and will get absolutely no quarter from me. There is a reason epileptics are not allowed to conduct a 40-Ton projectile down our highways with families and children sharing the roads. Their safety, my safety, the safety of my brother and sister drivers and, believe it or not, your safety are not worth taking such a risky chance. Yes, I know...under control...no seizures in years...blah, blah, blah....the problem with epilepsy is you never know if it will progress or when it will strike. That's why epileptics are verboten from CMV driving.

You can. (That's what free will is all about.)

That being said, there will be severe and most likely career ending consequences for that lie when you are caught.

The trucking industry is Federally mandated to have random drug testing. Also, at most companies, if you cross a damage threshold (usually $500 or so) in an incident you will be drug tested, any accident on the road there's usually one. Do you see where I'm going with this? Just for good measure, I'll mention random drug testing once more.

If the heavy drugs are necessary to treat your condition, trucking is not for you. Sometimes medical conditions limit your career choices. I'm medically unfit for military service for example. Just the way the world works.

Good luck in your career search.

Have you read about the side effects of these drugs? I googled them, and they both have serious side effects that could impair your driving abilities.

To get a good answer as to whether you'd be legal under DOT regulations, I'd speak with your doctor, and see if you can find a list of medications prohibited by the DOT. If they are prohibited, maybe your doctor could prescribe others that aren't.

Lying about taking them?...you could be putting yourself at risk, as well as everyone else out on the road with you. Why would you even consider it?

It's claimed that better than 25% and prolly closer to 50% of the medical exams are NOT properly performed !!!!

And gosh only knows how many current truck drivers shouldn't even be out here !!!

Besides, you already knew the answer before you posted the question !!!

After more thought I've got to add that this really is an absurdity.

    What's next?

Can I drive 40mph over the speed limit?

Can I sell my cargo in the truckstop parking lot?

If my tires hold air, they have enough tread, don't they?

Will trucking interfere with my "Street Pharmacy" business?

It really is a case of "If you have to ask, you've got bigger problems."
