Can you get your tanker/hazmat/twic with a cdl permit, or must u have a CDL 1st?

I'd like to test for my cdl permit and pick up my tanker/hazmat/twic before I apply to any starter companies. Is that possible or would I have to get my CDL first?

TWIC are for anybody who works in the transportation industry. so no you don't need a CDL

Before you can receive a Haz-Mat endorsement you have to fill out a TSA form on line to have a background check done and then have your fingerprints done which cost $85.50. Don't do this to soon cause the letter they send you is only valid for 30 days from date on the letter not from when you receive it. You do need at least a Class C CDL to receive it but not to apply for it.

You can, but it's not really worth it. Worry about getting a job first and then get your endorsements. No point in getting hazmat, TWIC and whatnot if you work at a company that won't require it.

 

thats what i did...... I took 8 test in one day (haz mat, doubles/trips, tanker, M1, Combos, Air brakes, Gen Knowledge, and Class C), and no you dont need your CDL to get your twic. Get it all at the same time! You have the right idea.

There are some that say go back and get your endorsements later...... but why put it off when all you have to do is turn your test over and take the one thats on the back? lol........ the people i know that say they were goin back to get their endorsements: NEVER DID. Not to mention you might find a job that you NEED those endorsements.

Maybe things have changed since 08', but when I took and passed all my test (including hazmat) i was told that "Your hazmat endorsement isn't any good until you get a background check (tsa)" , and IIRC it even said it on my permit (that it wasnt any good until i did so).... so if things havent changed, he could get his permit first, then go get his fingerprints.

 

You pay each year for all those endorsements, so that's probably why people are saying just get what you need.

 

Wait till you get a job then just get what you need. You are spending money and wasting time and effort needlessly. Moreover, most companies will pay for whatever endorsements you need anyway. Why the rush? What if you can't get a job?

 

Spending all that money on a MIGHT is a waste.

I might get raided by the Russian Mafia, so I'll need a bunch of machine guns, a Sherman tank, a few RPG's, and enough MRE's to last a lifetime.
