I was thinking about using those flashing lights during bad weather so I can be more visible.

Short answer, YES in some states. Georgia and Pennsylvania are two I know off the top of my head that require amber light permits.

Now PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!!! There is already enough people that have no business running flashing lights doing so and it is making the public ignore them when they are needed.

I have been fighting this in the towing industry for two decades -drivers like to run their flatbed tow truck down the road with a million lights flashing then wonder why the public crashes into them on the shoulder of the highway every week. They have become used to seeing them moving and do not recognize them as the hazard warning lights they are intended to be.

Too many trucks like trash collection trucks, landscapers and others are using these lights incorrectly.

No. You need to be running with an oversized load and a permit that states as such. Some states, you need to purchase a sticker in addition to the permit.

For most part you can’t have
An over size load sign hanging from your bumper when you’re not over sized. So chances are you can’t run lights. I’ve seen it box vans with old flat bed trucks that still have the amber flashers on the mirrors and they drive with them on. I saw on the flats foggy day in Utah. I thought nothing of it.

But its cool to have flashing beacon lights and oversize signs and red flags while running down the road empty. It makes you special. Just like a extra big gear stick.
