I am very close to signing on with Wilson Logistics. But I have a question about the CDL.

Wilson would train me in Montana, where I would also obtain my CDL.

Then, after completing all training, I would transfer my CDL to WA as described here.

Is it really this simple? The WA DOL representative said that I needed to train and be licensed in WA before signing on with an out-of-state company. Was that just BS?

I've never heard of that. Sometimes you have to get the permit before leaving for out-of-state training.
I'd ask Wilson about that I think the WA DOL gave you wrong information.

Thanks. Right, the first step in the process is obtain WA CLP, then get MT CLP upon arrival there.
Wilson says no problem with the CDL transfer back to WA, but I wanted to see if anybody encountered obstacles, given what WA DOL told me. The Prime Inc. recruiter is also under the impression that WA has peculiar/restrictive laws with the out-of-state testing/licensing. But, according to the site whose link I included above, there does not appear to be any real restrictions.

If it were me, I'd go on with Wilson then deal with all that later.

No need to get a Montana CLP, your CLP is valid nation wide and your test results will be honored by your home state. Federal rules require a state that has issued a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) to an individual must accept the results of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) skills test administered to the applicant by any other State.

Do not get a Montana CLP unless you want to switch your residency to the state, You must be a Montana resident to get a CLP in Montana. This will also mean you are subject to the states personal income tax as your home state doesn't have an income tax.

You get the CLP in the state you are a resident in and can train and test in any other state by law.

When I got my CDL way back in '96, I got a Montana permit. I was taught to drive there and the only way I could test there was to have a Montana permit. After I had my Montana license, I transferred it to Texas the next time I got home without having any problems.

That was the way it was back then.

The Real ID act and the above law that was passed in 2018 changed things. States are no longer allowed to issue drivers licenses to non-residents and states have to accept CDL training and testing from other states now.

Tell that to California and Illinois. You want a license there you have to test there

    So why bother .
If you move to those states
Just keep your cdl in whatever state issued it .

you have to go back every few years and renew it , no big deal.
