Does being home every weekend count as a restart?

If you don't need one, you don't need one. It isn't like a 34 is mandatory.

That is because your company must be pretty good at utilizing that "8th. Day"......and you must be willing to put up with it.

My opinion is this: I run my log book....nobody else, and not a machine either (when I was OTR). I drove for one company, that purposely gave me back, to back, to back 400 mile trips; just to keep me at that 8 1/2 hours a day, so that my 70 hours would never run out, and they could run my 8th. day endlessly on that system.
Bologna!!! The Hours-Of-Service is put in place to make sure the driver (that's you) is well rested, safe, clean and all that jazz.......not so the company can use you like a freak'n robot to pad their pockets as best they can. That is, unless you let them.

After running only 8.5 hours a day, you SHOULD be well rested.

If you need time off, put in for it. If you don't put in for it, most companies think you want to run. Why all the chest thumping about how you run things? If you want time off every 7 days, request it, take it, be happy. If not, keep running and be happy with that.

Why is it always the bad ol' company making people run like robots? You make an agreement with whoever is dispatching you on your hometime or off-time needs, and go with it.

Don't you know the HOS foce drivers to run when they are tired. If not you can read about it in countless threads.

I generally run 31 days out for 5/6 days off. That's what I like, not for everyone. I have gone as long as 6 months without doing a reset on the road. I have no desire to sit in some smelly truck stop for an extra 24 hours. I take my time off at home and run my log the way I like it. IF you need 24 extra hours off why not take them 3 hours at a time. I will admit that local and regional drivers probably can't make this work. Too many docks, load, unload, and scales to get the miles you need.

If you take 2 days off, you get a 34 anyway - unless you absolutely need to regen your hours, why take a 34 if you don't need it?

Hear, hear. I've been out since Memorial day and took my first reset last week waiting for a meat load in Lexington, NE. All in all, if I'm staying out, I'd rather work every day, not than sitting in the truck for a day in a place I'd really not rather be. I didn't mind doing it in Lexington as you can get a hotel room pretty cheaply to kick back and relax in and enjoy an adult beverage. ;)
