I recently left Schneider (turn the tractor in tomorrow). The main reason was due to my heavy sleep deprivation caused by irregular work hours driving into city traffic (drive from city to city). Since I grew up in the Washington DC area my hate of traffic is paramount.

My question is, is there a company that drives on the less traveled roads? Figure that even people that live in the country still need supplies.

There’s tons of work in the rural areas. Just depends on what type of trucking you want to do

Move, head to the Midwest. I hate driving, and I hate heavy traffic even more. I work in Michigan, and try to stay North of all activity. DC is a world unto itself, I used to live there... Well, stationed there at Bethesda. Last time I was out that way, 0200 hours, it was like Chicago at 1700 hours. Move.

Not really. Not otr at least. The ultimate goal is to get goods to the consumer and that's the cities. The interstates run through the cities so to get from here to there you have to go through a city. Regional and dedicated is a different story but delivering to stores is a royal pain without having to get into a city.

Family, general ,dollar tree type discount stores are located in most rural areas of the country but not built or staffed to be semi friendly, but if your good it can take you to every po dunk city you'd ever not want to live.

I wouldn’t wish a family dollar account on my worst enemy. Here in Cali, they build those places to fit 13 Honda civics and trucks were an afterthought

    You could try the oilfields
Are you sure its cities and not night driving that is the problem?
I had terrible problems driving at night , turns out I needed glasses. My vision was just barely off but it was enough to make night driving in cities really taxing.
Irregular sleep is a huge problem industry wide and scientists are finding out every single day new reasons why it is HORRIBLE for your health.
Not much you can do about that though.

I consider myself a "classic OTR driver". Where I am, I will spend plenty of time in rural areas running back and forth and up and down across the USA. But ultimately I end up in an urban area at one end or another. Sounds like your problem is you're stuck in an eastern seaboard fleet. You need to move out west or get on with a true 48 state carrier who spends as much time on the east coast as on the west coast, and runs anything and everything in between. But with the west and rocky mountain region comes lots of snow, ice, wind, steep grades, and chaining requirements .... so be careful what you wish for. Portland, Seattle, NoCal, SoCal, Chicagoland, Dallas, Houston, Twin Cities, etc have more then enough traffic problems to be an issue, too.

All that said, I could never run for any fleet that focused on the eastern USA. But If I had to choose between "northeast" or "southeast" fleet? I'd choose northeast. I hate Atlanta, GA, FL, NC, AL and all that area down there. I can't explain it. I just hate it.

And here in the rock they get robbed by thuggies regularly. Fortunately these thugs are too stupid to notice a Armored truck feeding our Wally world store every Tuesday Am...
