I am considering going to the Roadmaster CDL training school in Tampa, FL. The phone recruiter told me that if I meet all the requirements, that my tuition would be taken care of by one or more of the recruiting truck companies, and I would be essentially hired as soon as I begin CDL training. Based on what he told me on the phone, I should be able to pass the requirements. But, I have some other concerns. I am very overweight (But, I'm not too out-of-shape to drive. I play racquetball and exercise regularly), my work history is bad, and my credit is bad. I am afraid that I will commit to the program, and the trucking companies won't want me based on these other factors. Do you think this will be a problem? The companies that recruit there are: Swift, Werner, Covenant, US Express, Stevens, TMC, KLLM, CRST
Hello and Welcome to the Site Use our Search feature to help with your research. The new CSA2010, will be hammering down on drivers and their health issues, so check on that, to see what criteria they will be requiring of drivers. May I ask, are these companies paying for your school up front, or are they offering tuition reimbursement?
Look into this a little further - most training companies will reimburse tuition, they don't "cover it" as in pay for it. As far as your weight goes... as of now it shouldn't be a problem as long as your blood pressure and blood sugar levels are within acceptable limits for the DOT physical. There is some scuttlebut about BMI being a factor in the near futre but nothing official in place yet. Yep these are the "usual suspects" as far as training companies go (I think that you meant CRST) there's plenty of info - both good and bad - on the forum about each of these companies so you've got a lot of research ahead of you. Good luck and, welcome to the forum. ............ Jim
[HIJACK] ... Hey KC got yer Memorial day thing, thanks. My oldest boy headed off on his fourth deployment last thursday.. so it kinda meant sumthin' [/HIJACK] .......... Jim
It's not a reimbursement. As I understand it, The tuition is paid as long as I fulfill the contract to work for the hiring company for a certain length of time. I have not been given the details of this yet. Obviously, I won't jump into anything without understanding all the details.
Jim, you are so very welcome. Wow, fourth tour. That is awesome. Good work there, papa!!! You raised him well. I salute you both.I wish you the best,Jim
PhoenixIG, you are wise to do your homework and take control of your success. The recruiters and the trucking companies will be looking out for their own success. If you are unemployed, their is a program, (WIA pgm),offered through the Employment Security Commission, that would help you to get free training. This way you could pick the company that you would like to work for.
Jim Thank You again for your saervice as well as his, 4 tours that is awesome. Take Care. Be Safe. TD.
