I am currently running the following setup, and I was hoping someone here could explain a few questions to me I have. Cobra 25NW 2 x Francis 5.5 ft antennas with alum mounts. factory coax, still seems to be just fine. Now I am looking to buy a radio from this place: http://customcbradios.com/Custom-CB-Radios-C152528.aspx First off, will these radios talk further than a stock radio? I see all kinds of talk about increased receiving, but will it talk further? No one ever gives any numbers when selling custom radios, and I know radios cant be over 4 watts, but if you want to sell you should put up some transmit numbers. My second question is, if the radio is pushing say 50 watts, is that 50 watts to the antenna, or is there some kind of ratio/calculation to that? Can my Francis antennas handle one of those custom radios, or do I need to spend more cash on this company rocket and stick 2 grain auger's off my mirror brackets?! The stock setup works good, but nothing like what I want. Has anyone ever purchased a radio from there before? Any ideas on how far you could send/receive with one of those radios? Thanks!
FIRST ...... Yes 50 will go father than 4 watts how far depends on what kind of conditions you have. DUAL ANTENNAS well I'm not a belever in them I tried that on 6 meters with a phasing switch making them into a 2 elm beam and to me it was not worth the hassel. IF you already have a radio just get a linear good for 150 -200 watts and be done with it ...... Yea I know some hammer talking about a LIN-EAR ..... but this is being real ..... Dont waist money on what is just a illegal radio .......
Give me a shout sometime if you want to hear the numbers in an honest fashion. I build custom units all the time and I'm here to help you if you need it. Thanks, Dodgem
Let me first start by introducing myself. My name is Dodgem and I have been working on CB radios for a little over 30 years now. I also own a CB repair business in Indian Head, Maryland. You may visit my website at: www.Dodgem250.com I am not here to advertise my business, but, I get a bit tired of hearing the untruthful numbers some of these guys claim to produce in their radios, so... Regardless of what radios you mentioned in the forum, I will tell it to you straight with the facts. Cobra 25, Cobra 29 and similar Uniden units are only capable of 20 to 25 watts peak output power. There has been so many cases where other guys have inflated the peak power in the past, they sell the big numbers to the guys who do not know what the difference is. I have been around too long to play those games with folks. Exports radios lie Galaxy and Connex are capable of 30-40 watts. However, if you are going to use an amplifier, the your radio is only required to do 2-3 watts peak. As for distance, it all depends on terrain, weather, antenna type, ect. But, with 25 watts peak power you can easily talk 10-15 miles. There is no magic pill or potion that is going to make these radios do any more than this, unless you have a radio hooked up to a linear. I build custom competition units with MosFet finals, and then only still will a Cobra style radio do a peak of about 30-35 watts. These are the facts. If I can help you in any other way, please feel free to drop me a message via email at Dodgem250@somd.net Thanks, Dodgem DM CB Radio Products www.DODGEM250.com
BURP! Doug runs a Class Act At CustomCB . . . . those RFX Cobra's do in fact ROCK(125+ watts) for the money spent. Even the basic RFX 29 will kick the living DS(dog poo) outta any shops "tuned" 10 meter General Lee or equivalent. Again ......."ANY SHOP" Im not here to "advertise" I OWN A STEALTH TUNED COBRA 29(as well as 400+ other radios from the last 40 yrs) and very well aware of the "total havoc" it unleashes on the average truckin-up radio. S M A S H is a solid description Yes I read your post very throughly
those rfx modded cobras are doing close to 100 watt range............but they are still pretty new and nobody really knows how long they will hold up
11 months of steady use hasn't shown me anything to warrant not purchasing another.Dont need one but nothing based on my experience would turn me away from another one. They do well over 100 watts so believing they do less will keep many in the dark. Dont believe the abundance of proof thats available then DONT BUY ONE !
I have looked at one to mod my 10 meter FM radio one day I might give it a try but it has to run CLEAN ..... Yep 100+ watts to a 1/4 wave wip would kick butt on FM ....
The RFX has been installed in a few other radios and for some reason they work the best in the cobra radios and put out big performance.
