I live on Long Island and know the roads pretty well. From what I read there are alot of truckers that do not want to drive in the NYC area. Are there job opportunities for someone like me to make runs for companies here?

Many opportunities available for you. Just go on Indeed or craigslist and start there.
Currently Central Transport is hiring in Old bethpage for 23/24 an hour for local p&d.
Island Transport for 27.50 (top pay) hauling fuel locally.
Mail Contractors 22/hr plus 5.50/hr for first 40 (out of jfk or lga)
Brentwood-Mohawk industries s hiring for local work.
    Many jobs available.

If you live out of the city like Brooklyn or Long Island then you can make it work. Also, if you are willing to work and are smart with money. Jersey is better due to no tolls entering/exiting and many more jobs.

I heard trash men in NYC make over $100K a year due to living expenses and union, I would think a local driver would make big bucks up there.

The DSNY guys do make decent money once they hit top pay and with overtime.
DOT guys make good money too.

Forgive my ignorance but how does that work...working for a firm in NJ when I live on Long Island?
