delivering tractor by myself after buying from individual in other state

Hi, I am in the process of motor carrier authority/op-1 which takes 20days after applying. I know it is illegal to operating during this process period.
I bought a truck from an individual and needs to drive tractor back to my garage from a seller in other state.
QUESTION:
1.Can I drive the tractor without license plate, and carrier's info signs on side of the truck as far as this operation is for delivering tractor itself and if I have insurance and deed of sale documents?
2.Will I get caught in weight station(driving through 4states)?
I tried to get answer, but hard to get.

contact the dmv in the state you are buying it in.... ask if the have a drive away tag (or what ever they call it).. it's a temporary tag usually good for 30 days.. good luck

 

You need to have a temporary registration or in transit. In some states, you can get arrested for operating an unregistered vehicle and have it impounded. Many people buy vehicles and drive them, but its a gamble. You can have insurance, but if its not registered that's the problem.

 

I checked with seller's state dmv for driving away/in transit license. it costs 285, and it works only in the state it is applied. If I need to get this kind of license for all state I will drive in, simply I cannot do this...

 

Which is going to be cheaper, get the necessary permits/insurance, pay the fines, or pay a skateboarder to haul it back for you?

 

CK. with ST. you live in IRP.office will sell a (hunter permit) to get it back to home base, you can get a short insu. policy from OOIDA or anyone else to bring get it home!

 

I bought two at different times out west put bobtail ins on the truck drove home to north Carolina. Had to buy couple permits cheep otherwise no problem.just what I did.no tag no decals.no big deal.one 6 years ago one last year.man who bought my freightliner came here with bobtail ins anddrove home.

 

Except for nazi Mass, usually a temp tag is good anywhere. Just show up with the title, proof of insurance and bill of sale at the dmv and your good to go. I would dou be check on it again. Wouldn't hurt

 

I have driven trucks without a tag, but you are taking a chance. I have had a photo copy of the cab card and placed it on the drivers side windshield. I did not have a base plate and didn't have a problem. There are no guarantees. I would call each of the states in which you will be traveling and ask them what you would need. A friend of mine bought a truck in another state and drove it home without a tag. He took back roads and did not cross a scale. He was very nervous, but he did get his truck home. Whatever you do, make sure to have liability insurance.

 

Contact your own State Dept of Motor vehicles, explain what your doing, ask them for assistance. (temporary regt.) Accompanied with valid Insurance, during this trip, you should be fine.

When operating the truck, recall you are not a Motor Carrier, you have no legal authority to haul freight.

Your truck should be marked to reflect that: both sides of truck marked stating: Not-For-Hire. All decals, US Dot#, M/C#'s should be covered.

You are not required to stop at scales or use a log book. Sleep well, drive home with confidence.

(im scratching my head at what a weigh master or Trooper will write in the box for the Carrier Name when returning the ticket to them, for fixing the perceived deficiency ...the hopeful Carrier)
