Did you install updates this week ???

If so, you may get hosed in the future.

Note: Update KB971033 (pushed Feb 23)

    http://www.buzzcrunch.net/tag/kb971033/

While this update is hailed as an anti-piracy update. The language and general description could/can apply to NON pirated versions of Windows 7.

This update will phone home every 90 days forever, checking YOUR software. At any time in the future, YOUR software could be listed and affected. prompting you with the pain in the ### nag screen demanding you purchase a legitimate copy of Windows 7.

Please have a CC in hand for the transaction.

Isn't that what WGA has been doing on XP and Vista systems for years now?

Yeah, this is not something new with MS. They have been doing this for awhile.

Makes me glad I run Ubuntu. That and the fact I OWN my software. No license restrictions.

In response to both of you...NO this is NOT what Vista and XP have been doing for years...or for awhile.

XP and Vista only validate your software on install and when you install further updates/service packs.

THIS update, applies to Windows 7 only. And will contact MS every 90 days forever. Comparing your software to their database of end users and rules. XP and Vista did not phone home every 90 days.

The rules are subject to change at any time, per your end user agreement. And they can disable your OS at any time...per your end user agreement.

If you take the time to read the actual articles. You'll understand the concern over this update. PRIVACY isn't the issue.

Ever buy a PC that had an OS with an expiration date ?? You may own one now...if you have Win 7. Dell, Gateway, and others ;)

I figured something was screwy when Win7 was so easy to crack and pirate. Guess Microsucks was lulling everybody into a false sense of security, huh? I'll stick with Linux-based OSs from now on. I've got an old XP machine for gaming, and frankly too many new games are going the MMO route, or to platforms. So I don't see any real need for Microsucks in my future. My .02.

Dancu69, I have read the article and basically in a nutshell. They have been doing this except maybe with the 90 day phone home. Which I believe they have used or tried with Vista as trial to this. The reason why I say this, because I have a official copy of Vista 64. I tried using on two machines for trial and error to see what the effects it causes. It had allowed me to keep one machine running while the other machine kept doing most of the things said in the article to include calling back to MS.

Now I could go through the whole article and nit pick it apart but what's the use. MS is not going to be happy unless they have FULL control of your computer(s) and you have no say so. They are giving the public one more reason to stop using their product all together. Win7 could be a bigger failure then Vista, Only time will tell.

I haven't owned a non pirated copy of anything from microsoft since Windows 98. That being said the validation methods failed and so will this. In the event this does work, all it means is my system will be bricked for a few hours I will have to start over with my system and I will avoid this particular update next time.

Rookie... aside from everything else. SOME of us have valid reasons to tamper with Windows system files. While most users will not utilize (or see) a non MS patch, I will. I have one sitting on this machine right now.
I don't have the time to waste on Bill Gates and his paranoia. Nor do I have the time to WAIT on his slow ### staff to develop "fixes" for obvious flaws in their design.

I can honestly state now. It sucks worse than WinME ever sucked. Win7 is Sooooo slow, I'm considering rolling BACK to Vista. Hell, maybe even XP.

I did a clean install of W7 64 bit. After dumping Vista 64 bit.

    It just plain sucks.

So what if my desktop comes up in under 30 seconds. It's still just as useless, as not having it there at all.

I've disabled all future update checks. I'd rather do it as I did in the past...manually.

The only Windows OS I have purchased in the past ??? years. The version of Vista that came on my laptop. And I've had them ALL.

Vista and XP only required rolling the system back LMAO. Talk about clueless...refering to MS. Then the craks came flooding through. And taking the new service packs weren't an issue.

    I have a legal copy of Win7 ...but I didn't buy it.

While the Great Bill Gates employs 1000's to code for him. It is impossible to keep up with the 10's of thousands that exploit Windows everyday.

I keep looking for the new software called Chindows to hit the shelves every day.

Chindows; Chinese hacked version of the late great Windows. At 1/10th the cost.

Windows 7 has been working great for me. I have occasional lags, but that is more of a result of the software I am running at times. considering the money they make off people I consider myself like Robin Hood. I take from the rich and give to the me (aka poor).
