Do trucking companies that have "in-house" CDL schools do a credit check on student applicants?

If they are financing training I can't imagine they don't. In my part of the country well over half of the employers I have knowledge about have been running credit checks on job applicants for years. I have had my credit ran for job applications back as far as the early to mid 90's.

IMHO, when I have done hiring in order of importance for consideration were:

    1) Job history,
    2) Applicant honesty,
    3) Applicant attitude,
    4) Applicant creditworthiness, and
    5) Applicant interior auto cleanliness.

Now I know many will jump on here and say how ridiculous this is. Most will readily agree on 1 through 3. After that they will scream that none of the rest is the employers business.

What creditworthiness tells an employer is:

    1) How well you manage your money and this will relate to time management too,
    2) Whether you have realistic expectations/live within your means,
    3) How serious you take your obligations, and
    4) Overall what kind of risk you are to the company.

What a clean auto interior tells an employer:

    1) How clean and neat or lazy you are,
    2) The level of your organizational skills,
    3) Whether you go the extra mile, and
    4) How you handle things that aren't out in the public view.

I don't agree with it but most companies are using the credit report to judge the person. I know most gasoline companies look down on people with poor credit ratings because it might temp them to steel. It's a poor tool to use that way because there are many good people that have poor ratings due to family problems and other items out of their control.

PRIME told me they don't check credit, but as someone said in this forum: "Don't believe everything a recruiter tells you." That's probably one of those "things!"

I do think there are a lot of good honest people with bad credit. The problem is with the decay of our society and the lack of morals, companies are afraid of folks that might be desperate enough to steal from them. They use any method they can to limit their exposure and liability.

I agree and will add there are those with good credit that will steal when when they get the chance as they tend to be very sneaky and less likel;y to be caught. They stay off the radar becuase of a good credit rating.

You are so right. This is what is wrong with using credit reports, lie detectors, laws and rules to try to control and police morals.

You can't regulate and control human behavior. You must teach proper behavior to your offspring and they must be guided into making the correct decisions.

Now to top it off I saw on the news that companies are going to check the internet for any postings then can find on you. Twitter, facebook, and any other chat sites are subject to be checked. You've really got to watch what you put out there.

That's a fact. It has been going on for a while but is quick becoming mainstream.

Heck, some of these companies will lease you a truck without a credit check.
