My dispatcher was a driver and has been very helpful to me as a newbie. Just small tips regarding time management etc...

Back in the day as its said. At CFI, all operations folks came from the road. In my opinion, that was the best way. Of course you'd have the few good ole boys, that maybe weren't the best at communication. But they knew trucking. The been there, done that. That was good when a driver or customer was calling in. Now days its mostly college kids that have never seen the inside of a truck. Most are good people, and try to to well. Have just a few left that ever drove.

Depends on the company. Most of your "mega-fleets" try to hire right out of college. Now this is just my opinion, but it seems to me they don't WANT to have ex-drivers in those jobs. That way, they can better brainwash the dispatchers into screwing the drivers. Sometimes the dispatchers don't even realize how they are screwing the drivers until they have several months experience.

A LOT of your smaller companies are going to use ex-drivers as dispatchers. They realize the value of experience. They also realize the value of a good employee, and rather than just kissing a good person goodbye when they are no longer willing or able to drive, will try to keep them on board in other jobs. Dispatching is a natural for this.
