Don't need to test for Hazard on the CLP DMV test when with Schneider Bulk (Tanker)?

I'm about to take the test at the DMV in order to get my CLP and the Schneider recruiter is telling me I don't need to test for the Hazard endorsement. They are saying I only need to test for General Knowledge, Combination Vehicle, Air Brakes and Tanker. That I will get my Hazard endorsement with Schneider but this seems fishy to me. I was under the impression you should get all the endorsements you can to avoid any hassle down the road, is there a single CLP exam and then any extra endorsements are separate? Any advice?

 

Do your hazmat at the dmv and do it before you show up to Schneider. Unless things have changed they don’t deal with anything regarding your license...they train you on how to operate the equipment and dispatch dispatches based on what you have. No hazmat, you will not be pulling hazmat loads, no Twic card no Twic loads. That being said I worked about 7-8 months as a regional driver for them. I only pulled about 5-7 hazmat loads in that time frame. Mainly for Nalco and to ecolab. As someone new coming into the industry I’d recommend you have the endorsement and get your starting hazmat experience with.. they make you dial their hazmat hotline and go over the paper work and go over what you should be doing with your load. It’s very remedial and the line is staffed with foreigners with a thick accent but it’ll give you that experience so you’ll know exactly what to look as far as any hazmat bol, how it needs to be laid out where to put your bols and so on. When it gets annoying is when you know how everything operates and you’ve already dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s. Get your Twic card and keep the receipt. I did not pull a Twic load in my time there but they reimburse you for it Good for 5 years so if I ever need it I got another 3 years.
Now my last 5 months there I was on the ecolab dedicated account. That account paid 35 for compartment unloaded and everything was preloaded. All hazmat but it’s where I made the most money. If you’re in the Midwest region I highly reccomend you ask them if you can get on that account.... and if you have any questions about any part of the process feel free to hit me up.

 

I got the HM endorsement when I started.
No Twic though. I don't venture out of the U.S. and seldom into a port.

My experience has been this.
$25 extra for a HM load.
The only time I have been pulled over while driving was while driving a HM load, and it was for an inspection.
More restrictions while driving a HM load, so less driving time.

I never renewed the endorsement.
Not worth the time and money.

 

Another thing that may or may not matter to you is a manual restriction. A lot of fleets Schneider included are switching to automatic only. But there are still a lot of great companies that have manual trucks. If you don’t care to ever drive a manual no worries but if you think you will down the line that’ll be a big hassle if you have the restriction
